The Lakewood Kiwanis Garden in Lakewood Park

Alix T. Kaufmann Vice President

Spring is here and John Gardeners get ready! Mumma is beginning to tune-up the Kiwanis Garden for the 2017 flower filled year. In the photo the roses are just beginning to bud and you know what John has plans for when the tulips have gone, that’s right, begonias and plenty of them. His plans include adding one more “knock-out” rose to round out this pentagon next to the Woman’s Pavilion. Of course every garden needs gardeners and after the planting will come the maintenance, weeding and watering. In past years several of our members have stepped up and maintained the garden right through the summer and fall – hopefully we can count on you once again this year. The blooms highlight the Children’s Peace Memorial in the center of the garden.

Imm. Past President Ken Eberl received his Happy Birthday wish and customary carnation from current President Jim Trela. The Dictionary Project includes providing third grade students with their very own dictionary. To date we have donated 144 copies to students at Lakewood Catholic Academy, Lakewood Lutheran Elementary School and Saint Mark Catholic School. This Thursday, May 11, from 6 to 7:30 P.M. at the Woman’s Pavilion in Lakewood Park we will recognize the outgoing officers and install the incoming officers of the Lakewood High School Key Club. Parents are also invited and also our K-Kids and their parents are invited. KCL members are invited to attend. There will be hot dogs and light refreshments for all. This will be a good time to tell your Kiwanis story to our guests and invite them to join us. Dr. Robert McMahon, PhD was our speaker last week. Dr. McMahon’s expertise is in Horticulture and Greenhouse Technologies. He was employed by the Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute, Wooster, Ohio from 1987-2015. Among his many responsibilities was the managing of five production / teaching greenhouses and campus conservatory and teaching greenhouse production courses. However, at our meeting Dr. McMahon came to the level of interest of many of our members highlighted by the many and varied questions that were asked. His topic: the Care & Feeding of Houseplants which included testing the soil with your finger to the second knuckle to feel the need for watering and to water only when the soil is completely dry and to water thoroughly around the plants root system. Plants receiving direct sunlight for several hours a day and are rapidly growing should be fertilized every two to four weeks from late Spring through early fall if you feed each time you water; “Constant Feeding” care must be taken not to burn the roots with too much fertilizing.
