The Cardinals 3-4 (.429) all-time in games played on Oct. 22 dating back to the 1955 season. Saturday’s contest will be the first time LU has played on the 22nd day of the month since the 2011 season. That contest was also against Central Arkansas (Loss, 3824). The last time the Cards won a game on Oct. 22 was a 21-17 decision at Arkansas State in 1988.

Win Streak

The Cardinals’ victory over Northwestern State was the team’s third consecutive. It is the first time LU has won three-straight games (in the same season) since 1989 (LU won three in a row to end the 2010 season and start 2011). When the Cardinals step on the field against Central Arkansas they will be looking to make it four consecutive wins for the first time since the 1979 season.

Senior defensive back Brendan Langley is becoming a nuisance for opposing quarterbacks. Langley picked off a pass in the opening half against Northwestern State. It was the fourth consecutive game Langley has recorded at least one interception, and now has six picks on the year. He enters Saturday’s contest at Central Arkansas just one interception shy of tying a school single-season record. He leads the nation averaging 1.0 interceptions per game, and is one of only two players to have six picks this season (Lorenzo Jeremore - St. Francis, Pa.).

The Cardinals are going in search of back-to-back road wins for the first time since the 2014 season. That year Big Red defeated Abilene Christian and Nicholls in consecutive games.

Cardinals Exorcise Demons

The Cardinals rallied for a thrilling one-point victory over Northwestern State Saturday in Beaumont. It marked the first time LU had defeated the Demons since bringing back the program. It was LU’s first victory over Northwestern State since 1979, and ended a four-game slide to the Demons.

Defending the Sky

Not Getting Haacked

Senior Brendan Langley ended a streak of 107 consecutive pass attempts by Northwestern State quarterback Brooks Haack without an interception. Langley’s pick was the first of two by the Cardinals defense. At halftime of Saturday’s game, the Cardinals had held Haack to 0-of-4 passing with two interceptions. By game’s end the Cardinals had more interception return yards than the Demons had receiving yards. The Demons finished the night with a total of two completions for 20 yards.

First Career Pick

Senior Brendan Langley wasn’t the only Cardinal getting into the act defensively. Fariview, Texas freshman Kevin Davis recorded his first career interception Saturday against the Demons. He returned the pick 38 yards giving the Cardinals offense the ball deep in Demons territory.

The Cardinals entered their game against Northwestern State with no 100-yard receiving games from any receiver. Against the Demons, Big Red had two players finish the night with 100 receiving yards. Sophomore Zae Giles hauled in a career-high 10 catches for 108 yards, while classmate DeWan Thompson hauled in four passes for a career-high 139 yards and two touchdowns. It’s the first time the Cardinals have had a player record 100 receiving yards in a game since Devonn Brown caught five passes for 130 yards last year at Houston Baptist. It is the first time the Red and White have had two players record at least 100 yards receiving in a game since defeating Grambling State in 2014 (Reggie Begelton 12-119 yards and Mark Roberts 3-139 yards).

Settling Into His Own

Just a week after recording one of most efficient performances in program history, senior quarterback Carson Earp recorded a career effort against Northwestern State. The Robinson, Texas native completed 29 passes for a career-high 412 yards and tied a career-high with four touchdowns passes. He also carried the ball six times for a team-high 63 yards to finish the night with 475 yards of total offense against the Demons. His 412 passing yards tied for the fourth-best single-game mark in school history (Shad Smith vs. UL-Monroe in 1987). It was also the second-best single-game performance in terms of total offense by a Cardinal. Earp’s performance was second to only Caleb Berry’s 591 yards of total offense against Central Arkansas in 2014.

Dominating the Clock

For the second-straight week the Cardinals have done a great job of keeping their opponent’s defense on the field. The Cardinals kept Abilene Christian’s defense on the field more than 16 minutes longer, and Northwestern State defense was on the field nearly six minutes longer than LU Saturday.

No Fly Zone

The Cardinals recorded two interceptions against Abilene Christian, and have picked off nine in the last four games. Senior Brendan Langley leads the Southland with his six picks this season. He has more interceptions than eight other Southland schools and leads the nation in total interceptions and interceptions per game.

No Fly Zone, Part II

The Cardinals continue to have the Southland’s best pass defense surrendering just 148 yards through the air per game. LU allowed Northwestern State a mere 20 receiving yards on just two receptions Saturday. That is the first time LU has held an offense to fewer than 100 yards receiving since holding Mississippi College to 91 in 2014.

Last Second Scores

The Cardinals scored 14 of their points against the Demons in the closing seconds of both the first hald and second half. Senior Michael Handy recorded his first touchdown catch of the season in the final 12 seconds of the opening half, while sophomore DeWan Thompson hauled in the game-winning score with six seconds remaining in the game.

Daunting Task

The Cardinals have faced one of the nation’s toughest schedules in 2016. Each of LU’s first three opponents were ranked in the top 25. Coastal Carolina entered the season ranked 16th according to the STATS FCS Top 25 poll, while Sam Houston State was third nationally. The Red and White traveled to Houston in the second week of the season to take on the sixth-ranked Houston Cougars. Central Arkansas enters the week ranked 20th.

Lamar Football Game Notes Ray Woodard

Head Coach 34-41/Seventh Season

Ray Woodard has been at the helm of the Lamar University football program since its resurrection seven years ago -- a program that has seen incredible growth under Woodard’s direction. Since an impressive five-win campaign in its first season back, Cardinals’ fans have been witness to the consistent growth of the program -- a growth that has come at an accelerated rate in recent years. As if trying to make a statement in the 2013 season opener, the Cardinals set nine school records in the game -- which would be just a sample of things to come. LU set or tied nearly 50 team and individual records in 2013 and had three players receive All-America honors. In addition to the three All-Americans, Lamar also had a record 10 players named to the All-Southland Conference team, including three first-team selections. Running back Kade Harrington was named Southland Freshman of the Year, while senior defensive end Jesse Dickson was named league defensive player of the year by College Sports Madness. Woodard’s young charges continued the record-setting pace in 2014, which was capped by Lamar tying a school record for wins as a four-year program. Adding to the excitement of the eight-win season, LU picked up the record-setting victory at rival McNeese State on a field goal with seconds remaining. The win was Lamar’s first against McNeese and against a nationally ranked opponent since the sport’s return to Beaumont. For an encore, the Cardinals recorded one of their biggest wins in program history with an upset at No. 3 Sam Houston State the following season, and junior running back Kade Harrington became the first player in program history to be named Southland Player of the Year. Harrington ended the season by being named runner-up in the balloting for the STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Year award – FCS football’s version of the Heisman Trophy. All told, Woodard has produced 43 All-SLC selections, including nine first-team players, 10 All-Americans -- including one Freshman All-American -- one CFPA National Punter Returner of the Year, one SLC Player of the Year, one league newcomer of the year, one conference freshman of the year and an SLC Student-Athlete of the Year. Lamar made its historic return to the gridiron in 2010. Not only did the Cardinals take the field for the first time since 1989, but they turned a lot of heads with their immediate success. In their very first game - at McNeese - Lamar set a school record with 429 passing yards. McNeese was ranked 11th in the nation when the Cardinals put a scare into the Cowboys before falling 30-27. A week later, playing its home opener in front of 16,600 red clad fans, LU earned its first victory in over two decades by a 21-14 margin over Webber International. Woodard was named the eighth football coach at LU by president Dr. James Simmons and then athletics director Billy Tubbs on May 19, 2008. He came to Beaumont after serving three seasons at Navarro College - the first two as defensive coordinator and the final as head coach. His 2007 squad went 9-3 and advanced to the conference playoffs for the first time in six seasons. Woodard spent three years as the defensive coordinator for the Scottish Claymores from 2000-03 during his second stint with an NFL Europe franchise. Woodard’s other professional coaching experience came as the general manager/head coach for the Houston Outlaws (1999-2000) of the Regional Football League, defensive coordinator of the NFL Europe’s Frankfurt Galaxy (1996-97) and the Texas Terror (1996) of the Arena Football League. Woodard’s first experience at the NCAA level came in 1998 when

he was the defensive line coach at Louisiana-Lafayette. From 1988-95 Woodard was the defensive coordinator at Kilgore College and recruited more than 200 Texas high school student-athletes. The Rangers appeared in back-to-back Shrine Bowls in 1989 and 1990. Kilgore had a 9-2 record in 1990, won the conference championship and was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country. Woodard also had a successful playing career, from his days at Corrigan-Camden HS to Kilgore College and the University of Texas to five years in the NFL. After earning 13 letters in four sports at Corrigan-Camden from 1975-79, he walked on at Kilgore College then went on to become a two-time All-America selection as a defensive tackle from 1980-81. Woodard then finished his college career at Texas under coach Fred Akers. Woodard and the Longhorns posted a perfect 11-0 regular-season mark, captured the Southwest Conference championship and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation. Woodard was selected in the eighth round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. He spent the next five seasons with the Chargers, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. Woodard received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and history from Sam Houston State in 1988 and his master’s in education from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1991. Woodard received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership last October. Woodard and the former Penne Striedel have been married since March, 1982. The couple has one daughter, Jessica, who was married in April 2010, to Eric Martin. Woodard and his wife also became proud grandparents on April 23, 2012, as Trey DeSoto Martin was welcomed into the world.

HOUSTON, Texas – The Lamar University Cardinals had no answer for the nation’s sixth-ranked team as Houston (2-0) jumped out to a 28-0 first-half lead and never looked back. The Cougars defeated LU, 42-0, Saturday afternoon at TDECU Stadium in a game that was delayed more than three hours due to lighting. It was the first time the Cardinals have failed to score since the 2012 regular-season finale. The Cougars finished the game with 511 yards of total offense, while holding LU to 73. The majority of Houston’s damage came on the ground as the Cougars rushed for 381 yards and had three players with more than 100 yards rushing. Senior running back Kade Harrington was held to 23 yards rushing against one of the nation’s top rush defenses. Junior quarterback Andrew Allen came on in relief and was effective in the second half completing 6-of-9 (.667) passes for 44 yards. The Cougars struck first when Kyle Potsma scored from 39 yards out on the fourth play of drive with 12 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. After forcing a three-and-out, the Cougars got the ball back and appeared to be on the march for another score following a 38-yard rush by UH’s Mulbah Car down to the Cardinals 17 yard line. Big Red’s defense went to work after the run forcing Houston to attempt a 31-yard field goal which ricocheted off the right upright. It was a similar story on the Cougars next possession. Houston took over from their own 49-yard line and moved the ball down to the LU three before the Cardinals defense held on downs. It was one of four trips inside the LU 20 where UH came away empty handed. Following the defensive stand, Mother Nature took control of the game forcing a three-hour and 12-minute rain delay. The Cougars took advantage coming out after the delay scoring their second touchdown on a four-play, 36-yard drive that lasted 53 seconds. Car gave Houston a 20-0 advantage midway through the second quarter when he capped a 13-play, 91-yard drive with a two-yard run through the right side of the line. The drive consumed 4:36 off the clock. The Cougars tacked on two more scores to push their advantage to 28-0 and got the ball back with less than 90 seconds remaining in the half looking for more. Houston moved the ball into Cardinals’ territory before senior Xavier Bethany picked off the pass to thwart the drive and end the half. The Cardinals were held to 56 yards of total offense in the opening half, while the Cougars finished with 321 – 228 yards on the ground. Houston held the ball 3:58 longer that LU in the opening half. Due to the lightning delay in the first quarter, both teams agreed to a five-minute halftime but it didn’t effect the Houston offense. The Cougars scored on their first drive of the half when Postma crossed the goal line on a quarterback keeper from five yards out. The play capped a seven-play, 40-yard drive and gave UH a 35-0 lead. After recording their second goal line stand of the game, the Cardinals gave the ball right back fumbling it away on their own 23. Houston responded with a Josh Burrell – son of 1992 U.S. Olympian Leroy Burrell – touchdown 68 seconds later for the final points of the game.

BEAUMONT, Texas – After being held to only three points in the opening half, the 16th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers scored 35 unanswered in the second half to pull away from the upset-minded Lamar University Cardinals Saturday night at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The Chanticleers recorded a 38-14 decision to spoil Big Red’s season opener. The loss ended a string of three-straight season opening wins for the Cards. Senior running back Kade Harrington seemed to pick up where he left off last season as he carried the ball 28 times for 207 yards and two touchdowns. The Cardinals (0-1) ended the night with 391 yards of total offense, while Coastal had 407. In a battle of preseason player of the year candidates, Harrington outshined the Chanticleers (1-0) De’Angelo Henderson who ended the night with 28 carries for 158 yards and two scores. Henderson continued his NCAA Division I streak of 27-straight games with a touchdown carry. The first half was a much different story as the Cardinals stormed out to an 11-point advantage. LU’s defense kept Coastal off balance forcing the visitors to punt the ball away four times in the opening 30 minutes, and took advantage of two missed field goals. Trailing by three points early, the Cardinals took their first lead of the game when Harrington closed out the opening quarter with a 59-yard run. Harrington’s touchdown scamper came on the second play of the drive. The second quarter remained a defensive struggle until the 2:38 mark when the Cardinals again turned to Harrington who scampered 64 yards for a score - again, on the second play of the drive. The Cards took a 14-3 advantage into the locker room but the momentum turned less than five minutes into the third quarter. Big Red appeared to be driving for another score when Carson Earp’s pass was intercepted at the CCU 29 yard line by the Chanticleers’ Richie Sampson and returned 71 yards for the touchdown. Coastal converted on the two-point conversion to pull within three-points, 14-11. After forcing a three-and-out on the next series, the Chanticleers were able to reclaim the lead. Coastal used a 31-yard Chris Jones punt return to set up their second touchdown of the half. The Chanticleers ended the night by tacking on three more scores (two touchdowns and a field goal), including one with nine seconds on the clock to close out the scoring. Earp finished the night 13-of-27 for 154 yards and two interceptions. He also carried the ball eight times for 25 yards. LU’s defense was led by sophomore Davon Jernigan who recorded 14 tackles, including nine solo stops.

The Cardinals posted their best defensive effort of the season to snap a three-game slide to start the year. Langley led a defensive effort that surrendered a season best 14 points to the Lions and 356 yards of total offense. The Cards (1-3/1-1 SLC) finished the night with two players recording double-digit tackles – senior Xavier Bethany (13) and Chaston Brooks (11). While Big Red’s defense kept Southeastern Louisiana off balance, the LU offense methodically began to take control of the game. The Cardinals finished the night with 398 yards of total offense, including 268 yards on the ground. Senior running back Kade Harrington recorded the 16th 100-yard rushing game of his career carrying the ball 23 times for 143 yards and a score against the Lions. All five of LU’s touchdowns came on the ground Saturday as senior Carson Earp – who got the start at quarterback – carried the ball 11 times for 79 yards and two scores. Earp also completed 9-of-15 passes for 130 yards. Beaumont Freshman Kendrick King and junior Andrew Allen also rushed a score. King scored the game’s opening touchdown when he carried the ball in from six yards out. His score capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive with 3:33 remaining in the opening quarter. LU’s defense got the ball back 65 seconds later after forcing a three-and-out and a blocked punt from sophomore Zae Giles. After an incomplete pass, Earp called his own number and carried the ball in from 17 yards out for the score. The Cardinals took their 14-point advantage into halftime, and pulled away in the second half to pick up their first win of the season. LU was able to pull away due to Langley’s two second-half interceptions which came on consecutive possesions and set up LU scores. Langley’s three picks equaled a record only seen two other times in program history. Langley tied former Cardinals Donald Rawls (1983 vs. Louisiana Tech) and Pat Gibbs (1971 vs. Arkansas State).

The Bearkats (2-0/1-0 Southland) jumped out to a 30-3 first-half lead and held on in the fourth quarter to hand LU its third consecutive loss to start the season. Sam Houston State racked up nearly 600 yards of total offense (598), including 270 on the ground. The Cards recorded 325 of their 405 yards in the second half. LU finished the night with 227 yards on the ground. The Bearkat defense made preseason All-America Kade Harrington the center of their focus Saturday holding the Kingwood, Texas native to 76 yards on 25 carries. On the flip side, SHSU had three backs rush for at least 50 yards in the contest, led by Corey Avery who finished the night with 136 yards and a score on 17 carries. The Bearkats got the first score of the game less than 90 seconds into the contest as Avery capped a five-play, 75-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run. SHSU held the 7-0 advantage for the next nine minutes until LU mounted a scoring drive of its own. The Cards had an 18-play, 54yard drive that stalled on the Kats’ 27 yard line. Senior Alex Ball came in and booted a 44-yard field goal to put Big Red on the scoreboard, but that would be LU’s only points of the half. SHSU answered with their second touchdown of the game less than two minutes later. The Bearkats tacked on two more points when LU was called for intentional grounding in the end zone. Leading by 13 with less than five minutes remaining the half, the Bearkats’ closed out the opening stanza with two more scores. It was a different story in the second half. LU started the half with a 79-second drive that ended with Andrew Allen connecting with Zae Giles from 56 yards out. The score didn’t change for the next 10 minutes until SHSU was able to answer back. LU answered with a fake field goal that resulted in a TD cutting the deficit to 20 points. Big Red was able to pull within 13 but could get no closer against the nation’s third-ranked team. Allen finished the game 19-of-36 for 178 yards and two touchdowns, while Briscoe was 24of-35 for 328 yards and three scores for the Kats. He was also picked off twice in the contest. Allen’s favorite target was Giles who hauled in a career-high seven passes for 93 yards and a score.

The Cardinals (2-3/2-1 Southland) continued their dominance over ACU in Abilene improving to 7-2 all-time on the road in the series. It marked the first time LU had recorded back-to-back wins since the final two games of 2014. The Cards racked up 520 yards of total offense, including 309 on the ground. Senior Kade Harrington finished the night with the 17th 100-yard rushing game of his career. The Kingwood, Texas native carried the ball 23 times for 145 yards and a touchdown. He also hauled in two passes for 89 yards. Big Red held the Wildcats (0-6/0-4 SLC) to 306 of total offense. The Cardinals also held the football 16 minutes longer than ACU. Senior Carson Earp was once again effective at quarterback. The Robinson, Texas native completed 16 of 19 passes (.842) for 211 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats took the opening drive and moved the ball deep into Cardinals territory before the drive stalled out. ACU had the ball down inside the Cardinals’ 20, but a fumble halted the drive forcing ACU to send on its field goal unit. Nik Grau converted a 22-yard field goal to put the Wildcats on the scoreboard. Grau’s drive-saving kick would be the team’s only score of the half. LU appeared to be driving for a score of its own midway through the quarter but LU’s drive stalled and senior Alex Ball came on to attempt a 47-yard field goal. The Wildcats, however, dodged a bullet by blocking the kick. The Cardinals defense didn’t allow ACU to gain any further momentum after the play as they kept their hosts off the scoreboard until the offense could get going. Big Red took its first lead of the game early in the second quarter when they capped a nine-play, 81-yard drive with a 38-yard run around the right side from sophomore Zae Giles. The Cardinals were back on the attack after the defense forced the Wildcats to the punt the ball away on its next possession. The Cards once again used a time-consuming drive moving the ball down to the ACU fouryard line to set up a 22-yard field goal attempt from Ball, which he booted through the uprights. The Cardinals tacked on their final score of the half with less than a minute remaining. Earp found Giles in the back of the end zone from six yards out to give the Red and White a 17-3 lead heading into the locker room. The Cardinals jumped on ACU for two quick scores in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. In what is becoming a common sight for LU fans, the Cardinals first score of the second half was set up by a Brendan Langley interception - the third consecutive game Langley has picked off a pass.Abilene Christian could only mount one scoring drive in the second half.

Trailing by as many as 13 points with less than two minutes remaining LU scored two touchdowns in the final 1:43 of the contest to record the victory. The victory was the program’s first over Northwestern State (1-5/0-4 SLC) since bringing back the sport. It is also the first time the Cardinals have won three consecutive games since the 1989 season. Although only holding the lead for the final six seconds of the contest, the Cardinals outgained Northwestern State, 561 to 410. The Demons were only able to inflict damage on the ground as the LU defense held Northwestern State to 20 passing yards. Sophomore Cameron Hampton led the Cards’ defense with 16 tackles, while senior defensive back Brendan Langley picked off a pass for the fourth consecutive game – his sixth of the season. Earp completed 29 passes for a career-high 412 yards and four touchdowns, and carried the ball six times for 63 yards. After not having a receiver record 100 receiving yards in a game this season, the Red and White finished Saturday’s game with two, Zae Giles and DeWan Thompson. Giles hauled in 10 receptions for 118 yards, while Thompson had four catches for 139 yards and two scores. The situation was bleak early as the Demons raced out to a 17-3 lead and held that advantage for nearly the whole first half. LU got the ball back with 3:02 remaining looking to take back some of the momentum heading into the locker room. Earp orchestrated a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard pass to senior Michael Handy for his first touchdown grab of the season, but the point after was blocked leaving the Cards with an eight-point deficit heading into halftime. The Cards got the ball with 2:50 on the clock trailing by 13, and that is when Earp put together one of the best comebacks in program history. For the Cardinals it was their first victory over Northwestern State since the 1979 season, which was also the last time LU defeated the Demons in Beaumont.
