A pub landlord has been charged with manslaughter and perverting the course of justice after a man was hit by a van outside his premises and a CCTV camera overlooking the incident was allegedly damaged. Rostam Notarki, 52, owner of the Cardinal Wolsey pub and restaurant in Hampton Court Road, was allegedly brandishing an ironing
board while chasing a 53-year-old man on to the road on Sunday evening. It is alleged Mr Notarki, of Beech Way in Twickenham, pushed the man, identified as American Charles Hickox, into the road, where he was hit by a van at about 7.25pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.33pm. Two other men were allegedly involved and the pub’s CCTV camera was said to have been ripped from the wall shortly after the incident and later found hidden on the premises, it was alleged.
Mr Notarki, a father-of-two, was granted conditional bail at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and ordered to surrender both his British and Iranian passports. He was told to have no contact with witnesses or pub staff, excluding immediate family members. Mr Notarki, who came to the UK from Iran in 1982 and is a qualified engineer, has given a three-page statement about the incident to police and claimed Mr Hickox became violent when asked to leave the
pub. Extracts from his statement read in court claimed Mr Hickox left the Cardinal Wolsey to go to another pub, before returning shortly after and attacking Mr Notarki with tennis rackets. Mr Notarki has owned the Cardinal Wolsey since 2013. He will appear at Kingston Crown Court on September 24. He did not enter a plea. Mr Notarki’s 19-year-old son and a 49-year-old man are currently on bail, having been arrested earlier this week.
