Larry Fedora • Head Coach • University of North Carolina Larry Fedora, who led Southern Miss to the 2011 Conference USA championship, is in his first year as head football coach at the University of North Carolina. Fedora is the 35th head coach in UNC history and the 11th since the ACC was formed in 1953. In four seasons at Southern Miss, Fedora compiled a 34-19 overall record, including a 12-2 mark in 2011, and advanced to four consecutive bowl games. USM concluded one of the program’s best regular seasons by knocking off previously unbeaten and then-No. 6 ranked Houston, 49-28, in the CUSA title game and beating Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. The Golden Eagles reached double digits in wins for just the third time in school history and the first time since 1952. The 12 victories were a school record. USM finished the season ranked 19th in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll and 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Deke Adams Defensive Line
After serving three seasons as Larry Fedora’s defensive line coach at Southern Miss, Deke Adams enters his first year as Carolina’s defensive line coach in 2012. Adams, a former Southern Miss letterman, was in charge of a front four that allowed just 112.6 rushing yards per game in 2011, good for second in Conference USA and 22nd in the country. The Golden Eagles ranked second in total defense and defensive end Cordarro Law was named first-team All-CUSA. Southern Miss won the Conference USA championship over previously unbeaten Houston and then won its school-record 12th game of the year by beating Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. Adams came to Southern Miss after spending the previous year as linebackers coach and coordinator of player development at Louisiana-Monroe. Prior to his stint at ULM, he worked for two seasons at North Carolina A&T.
Statistically, Fedora’s 2011 team was among the best in the country on both sides of the ball. Southern Miss finished 17th in the nation in total offense, averaging 461.4 yards per game, and 14th in scoring offense with 36.9 points per contest. On defense, the Golden Eagles were seventh in pass efficiency defense, 26th in scoring defense and 29th in total defense. Southern Miss developed into an explosive offensive program during Fedora’s tenure, gaining more than 5,000 total yards of offense in each of his four seasons, including a schoolrecord 6,459 yards in 2011. In three of his four years in Hattiesburg, the Golden Eagles established a school record for total offense. En route to an eight win season in 2010, Southern Miss established 35 school records and finished 18th in the country in total offense - the highest finish for the Golden Eagles since becoming a member of the FBS. Fedora’s Southern Miss offenses were 31st in the nation in 2009 and 20th in 2008. While admired for his offensive style, Fedora also brings an attacking defensive philosophy to UNC. The Golden Eagles have Blake Anderson Offensive Coord. Quarterbacks After orchestrating one of the nation’s top offensive units at Southern Miss, Blake Anderson joins the Carolina coaching staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Under Anderson, the Golden Eagles established school records for total offense in each of the last two years. He was part of a USM staff under head coach Larry Fedora that won a school-record 12 games in 2012, including the Conference USA championship over previously unbeaten Houston and the Hawaii Bowl over Nevada. Anderson spent his first two seasons as USM’s quarterbacks coach and run game coordinator and developed Austin Davis into one of the nation’s top signal callers. Davis broke nearly every school record in an outstanding four-year career. Under the eye of Anderson, the Golden Eagles were one of 14 teams in the country that averaged more than 200 yards per game in both rushing and passing in 2011. The Golden Eagles had nearly 6,500 yards of total offense and set a school record with 461.4 yards per game. In addition, USM was 15th nationally in scoring offense, 16th in total offense and 21st in rushing offense.
forced turnovers in 45 games during the Fedora era and two or more in 35 contests. That turnover margin helped the Golden Eagles rank 10th in turnover margin nationally for the second consecutive year in 2009 and 20th in 2010. This season, Fedora’s defense set an FBS record with 9 interceptions returned for touchdown. Off the field, Fedora’s teams have succeeded in the classroom. Southern Miss’s graduation success rate (GSR) ranked second in CUSA in the 2009-10 academic year and third during the 2010-11 academic year. In 2009, USM was recognized by the AFCA for its graduation success rate. The Southern Miss job was Fedora’s first head coaching assignment after excelling in the collegiate ranks as an assistant. He spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State from 2005-07 where the Cowboys raised their rushing, passing and total offensive yards each year with Fedora at the helm. In 2006, the Cowboys were one of just two teams - the other being Boise State - to average over 200 yards both rushing and passing.
Walt Bell Tight Ends
Walt Bell enters his first season at Carolina’s tight ends coach after coaching wide receivers last year with Larry Fedora at Southern Miss. Bell was part of a Southern Miss offensive staff that helped the Golden Eagles establish school records for total offense with 6,459 yards in 2011. USM was 16th in the nation in total offense and 15th in scoring offense as the Golden Eagles had the best season in school history. Southern Miss won the Conference USA championship over previously unbeaten Houston and then won its school-record 12th game of the year by beating Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. Bell’s wide receivers were a big reason for USM’s success. The top four receivers all had more than 30 receptions and accounted for 21 of the Golden Eagles’ 32 receiving touchdowns. Kelvin Bolden led the team with 58 catches for 671 yards and had seven touchdowns. Senior Ryan Ballentine led the team in yards (742) and touchdowns (8) on 49 catches.
Gunter Brewer Passing Game Coord./Wide Receivers Returning for his second coaching stint in Chapel Hill is Gunter Brewer, who will serve as the Tar Heels’ passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. Brewer has coached three Biletnikoff Award finalists in his coaching career, including two winners, and most recently served as the associate head coach at Mississippi in 2011. This is also the second time Brewer has coached with UNC head coach Larry Fedora. The two were on Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State’s offensive staff for three years in 2005-07. Brewer spent six seasons (2005-10) at Oklahoma State and served in various capacities, including as co-offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator, receivers coach and quarterbacks coach. His term in Stillwater included five bowl appearances and the program’s first Big 12 South Championship in 2010. Brewer recruited and served as the position coach for Justin Blackmon,, who won the Biletnikoff Award in 2010. He also coached Biletnikoff winner Dez Bryant and Randy Moss.
Dan Disch Defensive Coord. Secondary Dan Disch enters his first season at North Carolina where he will serve as the defensive coordinator. Disch served in the same role under head coach Larry Fedora last year at Southern Miss where he installed his brand of the 4-2-5 defensive scheme. In 2011, the Golden Eagles improved from 75th nationally in pass efficiency defense to seventh, and were ranked 22nd in rushing defense, allowing just 112.6 rushing yards per game. Disch’s defense set an NCAA record with 11 interceptions returned for touchdowns. Overall, USM ranked 29th in total defense and 28th in scoring defense as the Golden Eagles won the 2011 Conference USA championship over previously unbeaten Houston and then won their schoolrecord 12th game over Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. In the final regular season top 25 polls, Southern Miss was No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches poll and No. 22 in the Associated Press poll.
David Duggan Outside Linebackers/Special Teams Coord. After four seasons as the linebackers coach at Southern Miss, David Duggan (pronounced DOUG-an) comes to Chapel Hill and will coach outside linebackers and serve as the special teams coordinator. Duggan served as USM’s co-defensive coordinator in 2011 as the Golden Eagles posted their best season in school history. Southern Miss won the Conference USA championship over previously unbeaten Houston and then won its school-record 12th game of the year by beating Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. In 2011, Southern Miss finished second in the league in total defense, second in rushing defense and first in pass defense efficiency. A pair of Duggan’s linebackers – Ronnie Thornton and Jamie Collins – led the team with 111 and 98 tackles, respectively. Both were named honorable mention all-conference.
Before arriving in Hattiesburg, Disch spent six seasons at Illinois.

Fedora.
In three of Kapilovic’s four years in Hattiesburg, Southern Miss set the school record for total offense, including a mark of 6,459 yards in 2011. Under his direction, the offensive line helped the Golden Eagles reach the 5,000-yard mark in total offense in all four seasons. Kapilovic and company broke the previous total offense record of 5,894 they set in 2010. It was also the fifth-straight year Southern Miss had rushed for more than 2,000 yards. In 2011, Southern Miss won the Conference USA championship over previously unbeaten Houston and then won its school-record 12th game of the year by beating Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. Kapilovic was promoted to run game coordinator in 2010, and in each of his two seasons in that capacity Southern Miss rushed for more than 200 yards per game..
Carolina will be Koenning’s second tour of duty in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He was Clemson’s defensive coordinator from 2005-08 where he accomplished something no other Tiger defensive coordinator had accomplished in the school’s history. Each of his four Clemson defenses finished in the top 25 in scoring, total, and pass efficiency defense. Koenning left Clemson and spent one season at Kansas State under Bill Snyder and two seasons at Illinois under head coach Ron Zook. He improved the Illini defense from 91st in the country in 2009 to 38th in 2010 and seventh in 2011. Illinois gave up just 291.8 yards per game and ranked fourth in the nation in pass defense, fifth in tackles for losses and ninth in sacks. Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus led the nation in sacks and was second in tackles for losses.
