LASER CUT FUSIBLE FRAME APPLIQUES Old family photos connect us to our past and help us to better understand today and tomorrow. Soft Scrap is a great way to preserve and share your family history. Highlighting the photographs presents an opportunity to share stories of your family’s history and ancestors … and you get to use fabrics!!! Laser cut fusible frames enhance your vintage photos. They reflect the feel of the photo, draw the eye to the photo, and add visual interest. They are easy and fun to use. The laser cut frames are backed with Steam a Seam Fusible Web. Just peel the backing off and press in place. Each package includes the photo frame and the little corner pieces. They remind me of the decorative corner pieces in my Grandmother’s photo album.

Fusible frames come in 3 different styles: Filigree, Vine, and Rose & Bow, and in both small and large sizes. The small frames are $6.99 and the large frames are $9.99. But don’t forget the back of your Soft Scrap®. Keep the information with the photo – names, dates, events. This is also a great way to incorporate and preserve handwriting samples and special memories. For more information about working with old photos, check out Soft Scrap®’s Grandma’s Attic.

Vicki’s Sewing Tips How to Embellish your Vintage Photos with Ribbon Flowers Get your lace, buttons, trims, jewelry, military pins, handkerchiefs, vintage fabrics and personal items out of boxes and use them to embellish your photos. I like how the look and texture the Fusible Frames and ribbon flowers and trims gives a personal touch to old photos. Ribbon flowers are simple to make and give your project a truly antique look. Start by selecting a color ribbon that compliments your fabric selection. Satin, silk organza and grosgrain ribbon all work well for both flowers and leaves. Here are some suggestions, but experiment with your ribbon choice. The size, weight and fabric of your ribbon will make a difference in the final flower and leaf. Size

Medium Flower

Flower

 

Fold the ends of the ribbon diagonally at each end, leaving about 1” tails. Sew a hand running stitch across the bottom about.

  

Gather the ribbon to form a circle, bringing the tails to the underside. Wrap thread around the end forming the flower. Take several stitches to secure the flower.

The stitches should be about 1/8” apart.

Leaf

     

The width of the ribbon for the leaf will depend on the look you want to achieve. With 1” ribbon you need to cut a 5” length for each leaf. Find the center of the ribbon. Fold each end diagonally at the center. Hand sew a running stitch along the base of the resulting triangle. The stitches should be about 1/8” to apart. Gather the ribbon to form the leaf. You will have to use your fingers to flatten and form the leaf as you gather it. Keep ribbon edges to the underside. Wrap thread around the leaf and take several small stitches to secure the leaf.

Leaf

Finally simply glue (Fabri-Tac) or hand stitch your flowers and leaves to the your finished Soft Scrap®.
