The week was highlighted by a pair of dramatic soccer games — with mixed results for the Crusader — and two more wins for the NNU volleyball team, which is happily making winning a habit. Saturday, though, was the day of last-second shockers on the soccer field as the NNU women were disheartened by Central Washington’s last-second overtime game-winning goal in the afternoon in Nampa before the NNU men’s team reversed that feat, winning with a last-second goal in overtime at Simon Fraser. MEN’S SOCCER: Talk about a dramatic end to a fantastic weekend. The Crusaders celebrated with a pair of victories on arguably the toughest road trip on the GNAC slate, posting a 2-0 win at Western Washington on Thursday before scoring a 3-2 overtime win at Simon Fraser that has everyone buzzing. Thursday in Bellingham, Erik Anderson and Fredy Razo each scored a goal and Alfredo E. Ontiveros made 6 saves in his third shutout of the season for the Crusaders, who started the weekend strong. With one win in the bank, NNU went for the sweep at two-time NCAA Division II national semifinalist Simon Fraser, and got off to a rough start, falling behind 2-0. Yannick Petzschke changed the flow of the game with a goal early in the second half for NNU, though, igniting the Crusaders comeback. Petzschke earned GNAC Defensive Player of the Week honYannick ors for his performance. Petzschke

A red-card against the Clan added to NNU’s momentum as the Crusaders tied it on a Michael Mollay goal, forcing overtime. NNU then dominated in OT and finally netted the game-winner for the sweep with 8 seconds left to play on a Rene Duevel goal. The sweep vaulted NNU into a share of the GNAC lead, landed the Crusaders at No. 4 in the West Region poll and as the sixth team in “others receiving votes” in this week’s national Top 25. VOLLEYBALL: It is quite happily becoming a very common statement: The Crusader volleyball swept the weekend on the court, once again. This time, NNU beat Alaska Anchorage 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 in a first-place battle on Thursday, then the Crusaders completed the sweep of the Alaska schools with a 25-19, 25-20, 2514 win over Alaska on Saturday at the Johnson Sports Photo by NNU Athletics Center in a match that saw plenty of NNU players put NNU freshman Hailey Cook dishes out an assist in the Crusaders win over Alaska in GNAC volleyball Saturday night. in important minutes. The home sweep helped inch NNU higher in this week’s AVCA Top 25 poll, to No. 19 in the nation. In Thursday’s first-place battle, Elayna Rice led the way with 16 kills and 13 digs for NNU, which also got 14 kills from Kendra Bodine, 47 assists from Michelle Terpstra, 23 digs from Taylor Roberts and 10 digs from Kaitlyn Tuholski. Elayna Saturday, the Crusaders didn’t let down against last-place Alaska, either, rolling to a seventh straightRice set win and 11th victory in a row. Rice again led the way with 11 kills, earning her GNAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Michelle Terpstra added 24 assists. Of course, the win over Alaska was highlighted by the fact that 15 of NNU’s players saw action with freshman setter Hailey Cook recording 9 assists, junior Jenna Caywood adding 4 kills and 2 blocks and senior Rebecca TenHaken putting down 2 kills and 3 blocks in the Crusader victory. WOMEN’S SOCCER: The men’s dramatic, last-second win changed the buzz on campus from another last-second finish earlier in the day — a Central Washington victory with 1 second left in double overtime. A disheartening result for the NNU women, who got goals from Ashley Cook-Cox and Nicole Nsa to grab a 2-0 lead 30 minutes into Saturday’s game. But the Wildcats chipped away with a late first-half goal and tied the game late in regulation, forcing overtime. And in the extra session, the late goals continued for CWU, which scored with 1 tick left on the clock to steal the victory. That came after NNU fell 4-1 to Seattle Pacific on Thursday, a game that saw the Crusaders play a strong first half. Nsa — who leads the team with 3 goals this season — scored the lone goal for NNU, tying the game 1-1 at the half before the Falcons pulled away. Crusader freshman keeper Daniele Ortiz made 7 saves in Thursday’s game Photo by Kari Stetson Nicole Nsa scored a goal in each of the Crusaders games last and stopped 15 shots in Saturday’s game. week, giving her the team lead with 3 goals this season.
