Late Spring Herbicide Burndown Applications for Improved Marestail Control in Soybean.
2, 4-D Ester herbicide combinations for increased marestail control. Use 1 quart 2,4-D ester per acre with EXURO for more consistent control. Use tank mix partners – Sharpen, Roundup, Liberty, Gramoxone and others to expand weed control spectrum.
The wet spring weather has delayed many herbicide burndown applications in fields that will be planted to soybean this year. Large marestail are present in many fields and the standard Roundup/2,4-D treatment may have difficulty controlling them. Some things to consider:
Increasing the 2,4-D ester rate from 1.0 pint to 2.0 pints provides increased control of large marestail. Several 2,4-D ester products allow this; however, it must be applied at least 15 days before planting. Adding 1.0 oz of Sharpen to Roundup + 2,4-D should increase control. Make sure EXURO + AMSol Plus or UAN is added to the tankmix for increased burndown activity. Use Gramoxone or Liberty + 2,4-D or Sharpen. Again include a high quality MSO such as EXURO. Control is better if spray volume is at least 15 GPA. Add complementary products for residual grass and broadleaf control. o Flumioxazin containing products - (Envive/Enlite, Fierce, Fierce XLT, Surveil, Trivence, ValorSX, Valor XLT). o Sulfentrazone containing products - (Authority First, Sonic, Authority XL, Authority Broadleaf, Authority Assist, Authority Maxx). o Metribuzin or metribuzin containing products – Metriclude, Glory, Tricor, Boundary, Canopy, Tailwind, Authority MTZ.
Be aware of the soybean planting restriction of 14 days when 1 oz of Sharpen is applied with products containing flumioxazin – Valor SX, Valor XLT, Envive/Enlite, Fierce or sulfentrazone/Authority products, Sonic, or fomesafen products – Prefix, Vise, Torment. Sharpen applied with the soil residual products of Canopy, metribuzin/Glory/Tricor/Metriclude or metolachlor does not have this restriction and may be applied up to soybean cracking. Sharpen applied to coarse soils with
