Background ●

From 1980 to 2010 there have been 138 natural disasters in Pakistan. Almost 50% of those disasters are flood related



During the same period, more than 51 million people were affected by natural disasters, and more than 80% were victims of floods

Background ●

Disruption of food supplies and agricultural products resulting in an increase in prices



Loss of livestock and farmland



Loss of employment and livelihoods for many poor farmers and villagers



Extensive property and infrastructure damage

Background ●

Spread of diseases especially waterborne diseases like typhoid, cholera and hepatitis



Increase in poverty levels as affectees try to rebuild their lives

Solution ●

Disseminate flood and/or disaster warnings through: ○ Texts or SMS ○ Mission critical voice communications including: ■ Push-to-Talk ■ Full Duplex Voice ■ Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) - Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) or Personal Localized Alerting Network (PLAN)



Pakistan has 130m mobile subscribers, or more than 70% of the population



Coverage is strongest in densely populated areas, which also happen to be the areas most affected by floods
