South Head Youth Parasha Sheet Parashat Lech Lecha In last week’s Parasha, Hashem was very angry at mankind so he decided to destroy the whole world. Only Noach, his family, 2 of each non-kosher animal, 14 of each kosher animal and all creatures and fish in the sea survived. After the flood, Hashem made a deal with Noach that he would never again flood the whole world. He showed Noach the rainbow and told Noach that this was a sign that He would never flood the world again. However, it only takes 300 years for the world to fall back into darkness. King Nimrod decides that there is no such thing as One G-d. He decides that Hashem does not exist and commands everyone to worship idols. Once again, the world is doing the exact opposite of what Hashem wants. But don’t you worry because there is always light at the end of the tunnel! As all of this is happening, Avraham is born and he is about to change the world! ”
At the very young age of three, Avraham went outside and saw the beautiful world. He saw the sun, moon and stars, many tall trees, pretty flowers and the beautiful ocean and wondered, ‘Who made all of this? Who created this wonderful world?’ The people would say, ‘don’t you know, the idols created everything!’ But Avraham wasn’t silly and he knew this wasn’t true. At first Avraham thought, ‘maybe the sun created the world’, but then he realised that this couldn’t be true. For after all, if the sun created the world, then why does it disappear at night time? Then Avraham thought, ‘maybe the moon created the world’, but then he realised this too could not be true. For if the moon created the world, why is it so much smaller than the sun and why does it disappear during the day time? After much exploration, Avraham recognized that there is only ONE G-d, only one creator who created the entire world, Hashem! In an attempt to make everyone realise that Hashem is the true G-d, Avraham destroyed all of his father’s idols. When his father, Terach saw what Avraham had done, he was furious! He immediately reported Avraham to King Nimrod. King Nimrod didn’t know what to do with Avraham. After all, he was just a small little boy. Finally, Avraham is sentenced to death in a blazing furnace. The fire was very hot. No one had every survived the fiery furnace. But a miracle occurred! The hot fire became cold and Avraham began to dance around in the fire! Everyone began to realise that Avraham had to be right. They realised that there must be only one Hashem and it is He who saved Avraham from the furnace. Avraham and Hashem both realised that living in the same country as his father is not a very good idea for Avraham, so Hashem commanded Avraham to leave his homeland, his place of birth to travel to the place that Hashem will show him. Together with his wife, Sara and all the people who had begun to believe in Hashem, Avraham began to travel. But to where...?! Hashem did not tell Avraham where he was to travel to! He had just told Avraham to begin walking! But Avraham had lots of trust in Hashem and believed that Hashem would take him to a beautiful land. After a long time of traveling, Avraham, Sara and all the people finally arrived in the holy country of Israel! Hashem promises Avraham that He will give the Jewish people the land of Israel as a present. Avraham and Sara loved to have guests and had tremendous Hachnasat Orchim, so they set up a tent in the middle of the desert, which had four doors, one on each side. This way everyone passing by the tent, no matter what direction they were traveling, north, south, east or west, would be able to enter and receive a delicious meal so they could continue on their travels. All the people loved Avraham for this kind act and also because they received free food! But Avraham was smart! While the people would eat, he told them all about Hashem and at the end of the meal he would tell them they have to Bentch, to thank Hashem for the wonderful food they had eaten. If the people would say, ‘We don’t want to Bentch,’ Avraham would say, ‘okay, don’t Bentch! Here’s the bill you must pay instead for

your food’, and Avraham would give them a very expensive bill. Suddenly the people would say, ‘okay Avraham, we will Bentch!’ At the end of the Parsha, Hashem tells Avraham and Sara to count the stars in the sky. There are 100’s of 1000’s of stars, way too many for Avraham to count. Hashem says to Avraham, ‘because of your kindness and your spreading Judaism around the world, I will make many descendants from you. You will have many children and grandchildren. The large amount of stars you see in the sky, that is how many descendants you will have’. Mission of the week: (1) Be like Avraham - encourage a friend to take on a new Mitzvah! (2) stand up for what you believe is the right thing to do, even if your friends don’t agree with you.
