Lecture 7: Cultural Relativism • When in Rome do as the Romans do – conform to the social practices (bribery, child in ther work place [child exploitation?] etc.) Approaches to doing business Teleology – Whether behavior is acceptable to the situation to produce the desired results • Egoism – where the behavior is right or not depending on the consequences to the invidual in question • Utilitarianism – whether the behavior is right or not depending on society as a whole (even if it breaks the law) o Eg. Nelson Mandela passed law allowing import of affordable generic versions of patented AIDS drugs to treat millions of sufferers Never judge another culture by your own standards = Never judge another culture by their own cultural ethics • Bonded labor – lowest and most unknown form of slavery o 21m are global workers bonded slaves, Thai brawn trawlers are rife with slaves o International law attempts to eliminate these practices through the UN Organizations involved with regulating international standards • (ILO) International Labor Organization – responsible for drawing up and overseeing international labor needs and standards • (OECD) Organization for economic Co-‐operation and Development – promote policies to improve social economic wellbeing • (UDHR) Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Lecture 8 HRM in Global Operation • Set up cooperation in your new host country o Local nationals – are promising and they come back to the home country o Third country nationals (transnational’s) – work on both fronts • Ethnocentric staffing approach – firms fill key managerial position with parent country nationals because they feel that possess same work ethics so they have more control. • Poly centric Staffing approach – filling position with local managers (they know the environment better)
