Legacy Leader Vern & Ann Cashel “It’s A Wonderful Life” is a fictional movie in which George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) depicts the positive difference one person can make in the lives of others...and the “ripple effect” that comes in putting others first. Vern and Ann Cashel have lived in the REAL world and for over 80 years the positive impact that has come as a result of their sense of caring/giving has touched countless others...some whom they do not even know. The “ripple effect” initiated by Vern and Ann has touched many and it is in their honor, and in the spirit in which they have lived their lives, that this Legacy Fund donation is made. Vern and Ann’s relationship with Drury athletics had its beginning in the 1970’s with the likes of Jerry Alexander and Nate Quinn (The Boley Connection), James Bone, Mike Carter, Lawrence Washington and the entire 1979 NAIA National Championship team. Their bond with Drury has since expanded well beyond that one program and it is with wishes for similar success in future years for all the Drury teams that this Legacy Leader donation is given. However, the “legacy” of Vern and Ann Cashel hardly stops with Drury athletics. The totality of their lives, their words and actions, have triggered a ripple effect of “caring for others” that has touched many. They initiated a chain of giving through those closest to them, their children and grandchildren. That chain continues in the way they treat everyone with whom they come in contact: other family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors, acquaintances and strangers...all with a consistent desire to help. Vern and Ann Cashel have made a difference!
Legacy Student-Athlete Shelby Hatz (‘15), Drury Women’s Soccer In another example of touching lives in so many ways, Shelby Hatz has been selected as the Legacy Student-Athlete on behalf of Vern and Ann Cashel. A lifelong relationship exists with the Hatz family, dating back to her grandparents, Clem and the late Shirley Hatz. Also, in keeping with the Cashels’ support of private-school education, the fact that Shelby is a graduate of Springfield Catholic High School makes this relationship and gift a perfect fit.
“I appreciate this gift which has been given in the name of Mr. and Mrs. Vern and Ann Cashel. I look forward to continuing being a part of their lives as I work toward graduation. It is a privilege to compete at Drury and I hope I can represent, in some small way, the memory of Jerry Alexander as a student-athlete and the life of my grandmother in a way Mr. and Mrs. Cashel can be proud.” — Shelby Hatz
