Commander Steve Schilling will be completing an unprecedented second consecutive term. Previously the late Joe Smith served as Commander in 1984 and he was elected again in 1990. But Commander Schilling served his two terms back to back. Thus, the slate of nominees is as follows: Commander Edwin Stern. Ed is a Vietnam Era veteran having served in the Army from 1962 – 1965. He was stationed in Germany. He is employed by Acme Tools in sales. He is married with two children and two grandchildren. Ed has Legion leadership experience having served in 1981 as Commander of Post 115 in Hettinger. After a ten year break in service, in 1990, Phil re-enlisted in the NDARNG and went to work full time for the NDARNG as the construction supervisor during the construction of the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. After completion of construction of the cemetery, Phil held several positions at the cemetery, during which time he was instrumental in securing two grants for the cemetery in excess of four million dollars. After 21 years of service at the cemetery, Phil retired as the director on 31 December 2011. We are waiting for Phil’s retirement business to slow down enough so he can finally take on the job of Commander. Adjutant – Past Commander Howard Burns 2012. Howard is an Air Force veteran. Bismarck Boys State Delegation Is Small
Legion Baseball
North Dakota Boys State tried a new approach this year by encouraging boys throughout North Dakota to apply online to attend North Dakota Boys State 2014. So far only one boy has applied from Bismarck. We are getting help from the school guidance counselors, but there appears to be lots of distractions keeping boys from wanting to attend Boys State. North Dakota Boys State is being held again this year on the campus of the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton from Sunday, June 8th through Friday, June 13th. If you have a grandson, or if you know of any junior boy in high school, urge him to apply online at www.ndboysstate.org.
50-60-70 Year Memberships At our April 14th post meeting we will have the presentation of 50, 60, and 70 year continuous years membership certificates. Letters have gone out to all 15 Legionnaires requesting that they attend the April meeting. We have one 70 year continuous member - Legionnaire Dwayne L. Grotewold of Bismarck. He cannot attend the meeting, but we have made arrangements with his wife and family to present him a 70 year continuous year membership pin and 70 year hat patch at his home in April.
