height deficit (the Lehman team averages six feet which could cause problems on defense if their opponents are taller) they had no weaknesses. “This is a very well balanced team with great athletes [most of whom hand picked by Head Coach Junior Garcia] who could match any team.” Cohen pointed out that this is the farthest any CUNY sports team has gone since Brooklyn College’s basketball team went to the final four in 1983.” Head Coach Garcia also has the distinction of having the only all-Hispanic team in the Division III. “Having the only all-Hispanic team can be difficult,” said Coach Garcia. “On the one hand, people look at you funny if you’re speaking Spanish on the court—but the fact is, Spanish is the first language of all of my players. And for some of them it is the only language they feel truly comfortable communicating in.” Lehman, the #1 seed, was led by freshman sensation Alejandro Flores with 23 kills. Flores was honored at an award’s banquet on Friday, April 5, and Sunday, April 7. He was named Player of the Year, CUNY Tournament MVP and NECVA Tournament MVP. Freshman Max Valerio made 16 kills and Sophomore Troy Jimenez had his second 14 digs triple-double with 10 kills, 27 assists and 11 digs while freshman Max Valerio added 16 kills and 14 digs. Both Jimenez and and Valerio were named to the All-Tournament team. When asked about his team Garcia had this response: “Our team was doubted and that is what kept us going. We felt that we were the best team and we wanted to prove it. Now we just want to go down to NYU and play. We want to make the most of this opportunity. ”
