Select design 

Follow the instructions on the pattern to cut the pieces for the basket size of your choice. Follow construction steps until the band is stitched to the top of the front piece.

If using a design from the collection, print the chosen paper template using the pdf on the collection. Follow the instructions on the PDF to ensure that the template is printed at the correct size.

If using one of the designs from the All About Embroidery CD, open the design in ArtLink (free software on bernina.com or on all BERNINA Exclusive Collections), or in BERNINA Embroidery Software. Print the template using File > Print. NOTE: if using Software 7, be sure to use the “open” command, and not the “insert” command in order to maintain the properties of the original design.

Trim the paper close to the edges of the design.

Cut a slit along the center horizontal and vertical lines on the template.

Fold back two opposing corners.

Determine the design center 

To determine the vertical center of the basket for the embroidery, fold the front fabric with the band in half with wrong sides together.

On the left side, mark the ⅜” seam allowance.

Bring the right fold to meet the marked seam.

Finger crease the fold.

Open the fabric back up and draw a line with a fabric marking pen along the creased line. This will be the vertical center for the basket.

Place the paper template over the front aligning the vertical center of the template with the vertical line drawn on the fabric.

Move the template up and down until you are pleased with the placement. (The sample was placed with the horizontal line along the seam line of the upper band.)

Audition the hoop by placing the plastic template over the template. Notice that in this particular case, the typical vertical placement of the hoop will not work since the design is slightly wider than the embroidery field as indicated on the hoop’s plastic template.

Rotate the hoop so that the design fits within the embroidery field of the hoop. Notice that the fabric is not wide enough to fit within the rings of the hoop. We will need to use a “hoopless” technique, such as using a paper-backed pressure sensitive adhesive stabilizer.

Hoop OESD StabilStick Tear Away in the hoop by itself with the paper side up.

Use the hoop’s plastic template to mark the horizontal and vertical lines onto the back of the hooped stabilizer.

Score and remove the paper to reveal the sticky adhesive surface.

Align the lines marked on the fabric with those on the hoop. Turn the fabric so that the horizontal line on the fabric (the seam line in this instance) matches the vertical line on the hoop.

Smooth the fabric over the sticky surface until it is well adhered.

Attach the hoop to the machine.

Check the design orientation on the screen. If needed, rotate the design so that the top of the design is to the left on the screen.

Also if needed, adjust the center needle position so that it is positioned directly over the marked center on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

When the design has finished stitching, remove the hoop from the machine and the fabric from the hoop.

Remove the excess stabilizer from the back of the project.

Press the design over a fluffy towel with the right side of the fabric down.

Finish the basket as directed in the pattern directions.
