Scripture references: Genesis 24:67; 25:20–34; 27:1–29; 35:23–26

1. Jacob’s Birth Abraham’s son, Isaac, married a woman named Rebekah. Twin sons were born to Rebekah and Isaac. While Rebekah was pregnant, God told her that her two children would become great nations and would be separated, and that the older would serve the younger. Isaac named his first son Esau, which means “red.” When the second child was born, he was grasping the heel of the first, so they named him Jacob, which means “he grasps the heel,” or “he deceives.” When the boys grew up, Esau became a hunter. Jacob was a quiet man who liked to stay at home. Their father Jacob loved the taste of wild game, so he loved Esau more. Rebekah’s favorite was Jacob. BFP: 51, 52

2. A Stolen Birthright Then trouble rose between Esau and Jacob. One day when Esau was hunting, Jacob sat outside cooking some stew. When Esau returned from the field hungry, he asked for some of the stew. Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.” A birthright is the rights and privileges of being the firstborn child. Since Esau was the firstborn, he would receive twice as much of his father’s belongings, and he would inherit the promise God made to Abraham.

JACOB GETS THE BLESSING At the moment, Esau thought only of his stomach. He said, “What good is a birthright if I die of starvation?” So he agreed to Jacob’s offer. That was only the first part of what Jacob did. When Isaac was very old and about to die, he called Esau so he could pass the blessing to him. Jacob disguised himself as Esau by putting on Esau’s clothes. His mother Rebekah covered his hands and neck with goatskins so he would seem hairy like his brother. When Jacob went to see his father, Isaac felt the hair and he felt Esau’s clothes, so he believed it was Esau. He pronounced the blessing on Jacob just as God had pronounced it on Abraham: “May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.” BFP: 53, 54

3. Two Nations Are Born When Isaac learned the truth, he prophesied to Esau that his descendants would serve Jacob’s descendants. This fulfilled God’s promise to Rebekah that the older child would serve the younger. Both Esau and Jacob had many descendants and grew into great nations. Jacob’s twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel. Esau’s descendants became the Edomites. The two nations, Israel and Edom, were separated, just as God had said. BFP: 572
