Lesson Plan Template 1. Lesson Plan Information Subject/Course: Mathematics Grade Level: 4/5 Topic: Multiplication

Name: Miss A. Weber Date: Dec. 10, 2010 Length of Period: 1 hour

Time: 9:30-10:30

2. Expectation(s) Expectation(s) (Directly from The Ontario Curriculum):

– –

solve problems involving the multiplication of one-digit whole numbers, using a variety of mental strategies (e.g., 6 x 8 can be thought of as 5 x 8 + 1 x 8); – multiply to 9x9 and divide to 81÷9, using a variety of mental strategies (e.g., doubles, doubles plus another set, skip counting)

Learning Skills (Where applicable): 3. Content What do I want the learners to know and/or be able to do? The children will learn how to multiply three digit numbers by 1digits and learn their multiplication facts better. Today learners will: The students will review and learn how to multiply three by one digit numbers. 4. Assessment (collect data) / Evaluation (interpret data) (Recording Devices (where applicable): anecdotal record, checklist, rating scale, rubric) Based on the application, how will I know students have learned what I intended? The teacher will observe the students to ensure that they are following along and are comfortable with the three digit multiplication, through formal observation. Summative Assessment: The teacher will test, after the students are given a worksheet to review, to ensure that the students understand three digit by one digit multiplication.

5. Learning Context A. The Learners (i) What prior experiences, knowledge and skills do the learners bring with them to this learning experience? The students have learned about multiplication and two digit by one digit multiplication the previous week. 11 girls and 9 boys Grade 4: 11 Grade 5: 9 (ii) How will I differentiate the instruction (content, process and/or product) to ensure the inclusion of all students? (Must include where applicable accommodations and/or modifications for learners identified as exceptional.) The teacher will go over the three by one digit multiplication slowly and numerously through modeled and shared instruction. Lesson Plan Template

B. Learning Environment The lesson will take place in the regular classroom. C. Resources/Materials -laptop cart -Grade four text books -5 decks of playing cards

6. Teaching/Learning Strategies INTRODUCTION How will I engage the learners? (e.g., motivational strategy, hook, activation of students’ prior knowledge, activities, procedures, compelling problem) Time: 5 min. The teacher will excite the students by telling them that they will play a math game at the end of class if they participate and ask for help if they need it/review.

MIDDLE: Teaching: How does the lesson develop? How we teach new concepts, processes (e.g., gradual release of responsibility - modeled, shared, and guided instruction). Time: 15 min. The teacher will review how to multiply three digits. Consolidation and/or Recapitulation Process: How will I bring all the important ideas from the learning experiences together for/with the students? How will I check for understanding? Time: 5 min. The teacher will ask the students if they understand multiplication and adding are similar and why.

Application: What will learners do to demonstrate their learning? (Moving from guided, scaffolded practice, and gradual release of responsibility.) Time: 30 min. Step 1: The students will get into their squads and practice their multiplication up to the 5 Times Table. Step 2: The teacher will go over three digit by one digit multiplication. Step 3: The teacher will use shared instruction to have volunteers come up to the board to answer some sample questions. Step 4: The students will do guided work, by practicing their own three digit questions at their tables as the teacher comes around the check, in a smaller setting. Step 5: The teacher will hand out the worksheets. Step 6: The students will write the quiz. Step 7: The students will fill in multiplication charts and then the teacher will hand out the already completed multiplication charts. Step 8: Each table group will play Multiplication War.

CONCLUSION: How will I conclude the lesson? Time: 5 min.

Ask the students how they would approach a two by two digit multiplication equation. Level of Thinking: Analysis

7. My Reflections on the Lesson What do I need to do to become more effective as a teacher in supporting student learning?
