Solving Absolute Value Equations: Examples
Steps For Solving Absolute Value Equations 1.
Isolate the absolute value.
ALWAYS check your solutions! This is not to check for solving mistakes, it is to check for extraneous solutions!
2.
If the absolute value equals a positive number, write two separate equations without the absolute value signs.
ex)
3.
If the absolute value equals a negative number, there is no solution.
4.
If the absolute value equals zero, solve the equation and there is one solution.
5.
Solve each equation separately using the same steps as solving linear equations.
6.
CHECK ANY AND ALL SOLUTIONS!
