Brandermill Community Association Weekly E-newsletter

A message from BCA Board President O’Hanley January has been a tough weather month for most of us. The cold and the snow have limited our outdoor activities, but we are looking forward to better weather soon. The Anniversary Implementation AdHoc Committee plans to start the 40th anniversary activities this month. The motto or tagline for the anniversary is “40 and Moving Forward.” The committee is also taking nominations during February for the 40 Hands Project. One property will be chosen from the nominations. If you know of a deserving family who needs some help with exterior maintenance, please fill in the nomination form found on page 11 of this issue or on the BCA website, and return it to the BCA office. As part of the ongoing celebration, the committee would like residents to sign up to have their yard be included in the Brandermill Spring Garden Tour. If you have a beautiful yard in the spring, please call Community Services Director Jennifer Strader at 744-1035x104 to sign up for our April tour. Our new pool membership fee structure is in place and residents may join the pools through a seasonal membership or pay at the gate per visit. In the coming months residents can look forward to major improvements at the North Beach pool and some minor improvements at St. Ledger’s and Harbour Pointe pools. Please see pool ad at right for more info. Community Character Committee Chair Dianne Cardea, has resigned as chairperson. Dianne has been a great leader in our community and has done wonderful work in improving the character and the appearance of Brandermill. She was instrumental in our revitalization efforts and she and her committee have worked tirelessly on landscaping, tree management, home awards and many other projects. She will continue to be active with the Branderbassadors, a group of Brandermill volunteers who tutor at the local schools. Many thanks go to Dianne and the members of CCC for their many years of service to our community. Stay safe and warm during our last full month of winter. We CAN survive it!

Two Seats Up for Board of Directors There are two seats on the BCA Board of Directors that are up for election this spring. The current terms of President Joan O’Hanley and Treasurer Frances Hillman will be coming to an end in April. Any member interested in running for the Board is strongly encouraged to go by the office and pick up a Nomination package. The deadline for a candidate to be included in the March issue of the Village Mill is February 21.

Swim meet at North Beach.

The Board of Directors voted 5-1 at its meeting on January 28, 2014 to award the contract for major pool maintenance to SwimMetro Construction, Inc. of Richmond. The Board voted to authorize the Community Manager to enter into a contract with SwimMetro for the purposes of performing major maintenance at the pools, in an amount not to exceed $203,000. The Board also approved supplemental spending of $75,000 to accomplish additional work at the St. Ledger and Harbour Pointe pools. All of the funding for the contract will be from the Replacement Capital Reserve Fund. See Let’s go swimming on page 2.

Home-based businesses survey mailed On January 6, the Board of Directors voted 4-2 to survey the community in response to a request by member Joni Roberts asking for the BCA’s support of her operation of a family day care in her home. The Board took several weeks to be diligent in drafting the survey, going through multiple drafts. Ultimately, the Board, with the advice of legal counsel, resolved to issue an informational cover memorandum along with a five-question survey. The surveys were mailed to each association member property; this totaled 3,947 surveys. Members are strongly encouraged to fill out the survey and return it by mail or by dropping it off at the office. The larger the response, the more weight the Board can give to the survey results. The deadline for postmarked return is February 12; deadline for dropping off the surveys is 5 p.m. on Friday, February 14.

FEED23112 Ribbon Cutting Join FEED23112 at Clover Hill High School for Community the official ribbon cutting ceremony, February 1 at Services 11 a.m. Individuals and families living above the poverty line can quickly plunge into a financial crisis by a lost job, medical emergency, unexpected expense or loss of income. Hunger hurts both mental and physical health, it lowers school and work performance and tears Jennifer Strader families apart. FEED23112 is a new concept developed by local groups in the 23112 zip code area who want to be sure these people receive help. FEED23112 has been put together by The Brandermill Church, Brandermill Community Association, Brandermill Regional Men’s Club, Clover Hill High School, Journey Christian Church, Chesterfield County School Board Chair Dianne Smith, and organizer/ founder, Ann Marie Luhmann. We have held many food drives over the past several months and are now ready to distribute food to our community. We hope you will join us! Many activities are planned including games for children. Food and supplies which are available include: bottled water, Capri Sun drinks, PopTarts, Chef Boyardee, flip-top soups (not tomato), crackers, pasta, mac and cheese, cereal bars, canned meats, spoons, forks, napkins, microwavable bowls, Ziploc bags, toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo and soap. If you are someone in need or know of someone in need, please email Anne Marie Luhmann at [email protected] or call 639-4940x23112. Messages are regularly checked. All calls are confidential. Brandermill residents are welcome to drop off any donations at the BCA office.

Garden Language Still Being Considered The Board of Directors (BOD) met on Tuesday, January 28 with the Architectural Review Board (ARB) to discuss several proposed changes to the Residential Design Standards with regard to fruit and vegetable gardens. The Association has been trying to come up with language that would clarify if a garden can be planted and if so, where, what size, and to deal with other variables. At this point, the ARB is to submit draft language to the BOD by February 28. The proposed draft language will then be available for review and comment by the membership with possible consideration by the Board at the regular monthly meeting in April.

The improvement projects include the following: For all 3 pools drain and clean, re-plaster, and replace the coping, waterline tile, and demarcation tile; For North Beach Pool – repair the crack in the deep well, replace the pool lights, replace the tile lanes and targets, install new plates at the handrails, install new anti-entrapment covers for the skimmer equalizer fittings, caulk the interior expansion joints, replace certain portions of the main pool deck, and completely replace the decking around the wading pool. The Board also discussed a lengthy list of other pool projects that the Community Manager had presented for consideration. The CM did not recommend that they all be done, and certainly not by summer 2014. However, the Board did provide feedback on the aspects that they want the CM to pursue. The CM will be getting quotes on replacing the furniture, gutting the bathrooms at North Beach, items that address safety concerns, and many of the little things that will make each pool complex more enjoyable and inviting. These improvements, along with the new fee schedule, should make for a very different summer at the Brandermill pools
