LexisNexis - People Library Guide WHAT IS LEXISNEXIS - PEOPLE? LexisNexis – People provides full-text coverage from reference sources and newspapers as well as general, legal, medical, and business periodicals. It gives biographical information for a wide range of individuals.

WHEN SHOULD I USE LEXISNEXIS - PEOPLE? When you have to:

 find a biography for a public figure  search the news for a particular person HOW DO I CONNECT TO LEXISNEXIS - PEOPLE? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Go to the Fisher College Library homepage, http://www.fisher.edu/library Click Online Databases Click Biography References Click LexisNexis - General The following page should appear:

LexisNexis - People Library Guide WHAT DO I DO NEXT? 1. Enter search terms in the Biographical Information search box and click Search 2. Results will appear in order of relevance 3. On the left side you can view results by Sources, Publication Name, Subject, Industry, Company, Geography, Language, or People 4. On the top right of your search result you can also search within results to narrow your search

ADVANCED SEARCHING 1. From the main search page, click Advanced Options 2. You can limit your search by date or source type:  Biographical Reference  Political Profiles  Marquis Who’s Who  Recent News Stories 3. You can also build your own segment search, when looking for something very specific (see hints on search page)

 

Find synonyms of your search term (use the word OR to connect the terms) e.g., automobile or car Lengthen the date range

SOURCE DIRECTORY Located on the top right section of the screen, a listing of sources that includes information on publication coverage, frequency, online availability, publisher, description, data format, and exclusions. HOW DO I PRINT OR E-MAIL COPIES?

To print: 1. Click on the printer icon on the top right of the document you wish to print 2. Click Print To e-mail: 1. Select the mail icon on the top right of the document you wish to send 2. Type your e-mail address 3. Click on the Send button

SEARCHING TIPS HOW DO I CITE ARTICLES? If you find too many articles:  

Limit (shorten) the date range Add more terms (use the word AND to connect the terms)  e.g., starbucks and japan  Specify that your search terms should be near each other (use w/# to specify how close the terms should be in the search) If you find too few articles:  

1. Click on the open book icon on the top right of the document you need citation information for 2. Under Style, choose MLA, APA, or Chicago 3. Click the button for Display Bibliographic Information in a new window 4. Click Export 5. The citation will appear in a new window. Copy and paste it into your document to save it.

Search different forms of the word (use an exclamation point “!”) e.g., negligen! finds negligent, negligently, and negligence
