FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE MRS. ILANA BRENNAN

Family and Consumer Science is a state mandated course designed to keep up with today’s rapidly changing society. The basic premise of the course is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. Topics are covered using both hands-on and academic approaches integrating the unique resources of the Pocantico Hills community. Process Skills Students begin with the Personal Development. They learn and apply the decision-making process to common adolescent scenarios concerning selfesteem, goal-setting, understanding personal values, identifying and coping with feelings, dealing with stress, and improving communication skills.

Consumerism and Financial Management Students apply decision-making skills to the world around them. They learn how to make educated consumer choices and understand money management. Consumer laws, rights, and responsibilities plus examples of marketing persuasion are studied while exploring consumer publications. Writing a letter of complaint is a practical tool they learn in case a legitimate problem arises.

Self-Assessment and Career Exploration Middle School is an ideal time to assess personal strengths. Students use the decision making process in relation to career planning. Information from various interest inventories are utilized in class. They are encouraged to explore tentative occupational options after an in-depth analysis of their individual traits. Students also analyze “real-life” teen entrepreneur success stories.

Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Food Guide Pyramid, reading labels, nutrient density, special dietary and weight management needs, food science and technology

 Food Disorders: Obesity, Anorexia & Bulimia. The program is based on the belief that the ability to reason, think critically and creatively, and reflect on one’s actions will empower students to act responsibly towards themselves, their families, their peers, and the larger society.
