TUF TALK ~ BUILDING YOUR BRAND
WORK ETHIC
Work ethic is important. Can people count on you? Are you dependable, or do you show up late and sloppy? Work ethic is dedication. It’s about being committed for the long term and working hard at whatever you do.
“Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.” ~ Stephen King
WARM-UP STRETCH Consider the following quote:
“Good is the enemy of great.” –Jimmy Collins • Define good:_______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ • Define great:_______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ In your own words, what does this quote mean?____________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ What have you accomplished today to make you feel great?___________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________
Work ethic is a person’s attitude, beliefs, and feelings about work. People with a good work ethic do what they say they’re going to do. They get the job done and go beyond the requirements without being told to do so. Work ethic shows up in grades, athletic performance, and personal relationships.

Think about the people in your classes, on your team, or in your social circles. Think of someone whose picture belongs with a caption about bad work ethic and someone whose picture belongs with a caption about good work ethic.
ACTIVITY
Read each statement below and evaluate what kind of work ethic is being expressed and circle which best applies: good work ethic or bad work ethic. • Free time in my classes? I think I’ll send a snap chat of the student next to me instead of studying SAT vocab.
Good or Bad
• Days where I work hard and accomplish my goals, I always feel great.
Good or Bad
• Life is more meaningful if I have time to chill and blow off some things.
Good or Bad
• Due tomorrow? I guess I will do it tomorrow.
Good or Bad
• Practice starts at 6:00. I’ll be there warming up at 5:15.
Good or Bad
• I started from the bottom of my class and now I’m getting scholarship offers.
Good or Bad
• I will do the job well only when my coach is watching.
Good or Bad
• I’m late for the party. I’ll cram for my test later.
Good or Bad
If you’re like most people, you recognized your own attitudes and actions in some of the good and in some of the bad examples in the previous activity. We all have good and bad habits, but it’s your responsibility to create changes where they are needed. It’s up to you to correct your bad habits and develop good ones that will lead you to a better work ethic.
“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” ~ Kevin Durant
3 D’S OF GOOD WORK ETHIC Dependability, Dedication and Do Work. These are three important characteristics of a good work ethic.
Did you know that: • American Idol host Ryan Secrest hosts a radio show from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and runs a production company while appearing 7 days a week on “E”? • NBA legend Michael Jordan spent his off seasons taking hundreds of jump shots a day? • Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant completely changed his shooting technique, rather than sitting out after breaking a finger? • Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi worked the graveyard shift as a receptionist while putting herself through Yale? • Venus and Serena Williams were up hitting tennis balls at 6 a.m. from the time they were 7 and 8 years old? What makes these people stand out? Work ethic. Working hard produces good results. Let’s find out how.

• Being committed. Keep your promises. Do what you say you are going to do. Don’t forget commitments. Write things down. No excuses. You will earn respect from others if you keep your promises and commitments. • Being on time. Be where you say you are going to be exactly when you say you are going to be there. If you are constantly late, it is just plain selfish. It says to others, “my time is more valuable than your time,” making them angry and disappointed in you. • Being trustworthy. Being trustworthy is exactly what the word says... being worthy of someone’s trust. The only way to be trustworthy is to be honest and reliable over and over and over again.
ACTIVITY
Are You Dependable? List 3 situations or ways in which other people (parents, teachers, coaches, friends, etc.) would describe you as being dependable. 1)_________________________________________________________________________________ 2)_________________________________________________________________________________ 3)_________________________________________________________________________________ We all have our moments of weakness. List 3 tasks you often avoid or put off by making excuses. These tend to be things we are supposed to do, but don’t always enjoy. Example: I am often late for my tutoring sessions. 1)_________________________________________________________________________________ 2)_________________________________________________________________________________ 3)_________________________________________________________________________________
“Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.” ~ Sam Ewing
TUF Excuse-Busters Action Plan Think of the 3 weaknesses you just named. Now, think of one strategy for each that you can use to be more dependable (more committed, more on time, more trustworthy, etc.). Example: I will set my alarm one hour ahead of the scheduled session. • Dependability strategy #1:____________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ • Dependability strategy #2:____________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ • Dependability strategy #3:____________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ Remember: being dependable affects not only you, but everyone around you. You must decide if you are going to be dependable, or a “slacker”. So, decide now: • Are you going to show up or not show up? • Are you going to give it your all or give a lame effort? • Will you focus on the task at hand, or will you have your head in the clouds?

BUILDING YOUR BRAND BE DEDICATED #2 BE DEDICATED
Being dedicated means that you are 100% committed to something, and that you are “all in!”, no matter what.

Remember the 3 P’s! 1) Practice, practice, practice - Put in more time than anyone else. 2) Plan - Have a specific plan of how you will be the best. 3) Persevere - Have grit. Gut it out. Stick through hard times. Sometimes it may seem that successful people have been born with extraordinary talent, have had great luck in life, or have happened to be in the right place at the right time. Chances are that those people also had to put in a lot of hard work. You won’t go far in life if you only rely on talent, luck or being in the right place at the right time.
What distinguishes the merely talented from the truly great is dedication - the willingness to get in earlier, stay later, set higher goals and do more than everyone around them.
ACTIVITY
Being a student-athlete takes dedication in the classroom, in social situations, and in your sport. List 3 ways you can be dedicated in all three areas. Be specific and remember the three P’s: Practice, Plan, Persevere. Example: I will get extra tutoring in the classes where I have a C or lower so I can earn an A by the end of the grading period. How can you show your dedication in school? 1)_________________________________________________________________________________ 2)_________________________________________________________________________________ 3)_________________________________________________________________________________
“Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t.” ~ Jerry Rice
How can you show your dedication to your friends and family? 1)_________________________________________________________________________________ 2)_________________________________________________________________________________ 3)_________________________________________________________________________________ How can you show your dedication to your team and sport? 1)_________________________________________________________________________________ 2)_________________________________________________________________________________ 3)_________________________________________________________________________________
DO WORK #3 DO WORK! _
“Do Work” means: Go for it! Get after it! Get it done! Whatever it takes!
Name 3 people that come to mind that you consider to be go-getters and get the job done, no matter what. 1)_________________________________________________________________________________ 2)_________________________________________________________________________________ 3)_________________________________________________________________________________ How can you “Get After It” better than you do now? 1)_________________________________________________________________________________ 2)_________________________________________________________________________________ 3)_________________________________________________________________________________ Do you “Do Work” even when no-one is watching? Work ethic is not just a clever term. It’s not easy to be a student-athlete and to be great at it. That’s why your coaches, teachers, parents, and mentors continually stress to you the importance of showing a strong work ethic on and off the field. Work hard! Practice hard! Study hard! To develop the habits that go with a good work ethic, you’ll need to remember the 3 D’s:
1) Be Dependable – Say what you mean and do what you say!
2) Be Dedicated – Show up early and ready to rock!
3) Do Work – Go for it! Get after it! Get it done! Whatever it takes!
REMEMBER:
• Good habits are just as difficult to break as bad habits. • Start creating good habits now!
