Lighting tips Turn off lights

Keep clean

Turn off any lights that are not actively being used, especially at night.

Make sure bulbs, fixtures, and reflective surfaces are cleaned regularly to increase the output of lights.

Use the daylight

Replace incandescents

Use free natural light instead of artificial light wherever possible.

If you still have any incandescent bulbs, replace them with LEDs.

Clean the windows

Automate savings

Clean windows and skylights to let in more natural light and turn off artificial lighting where possible.

Install occupancy sensors and daylight sensors so lights are turned off automatically when not needed.

Stop overlighting

Don’t waste outdoor lighting

Remove any excess lighting; it wastes energy and can cause eyestrain, headaches, and glare.

Make sure outdoor lighting is off during the day, whether manually or with a photocell timer.

Lighting tips Paint it bright

Use task lighting

Since light bounces off walls and ceilings, consider painting the walls a light color.

Turn off ceiling lights and use desk lamps, floor lamps, or under-counter lights whenever you can.

Label switches

LED exit signs

Identify the lights that need to be left on 24 hours a day versus those that can be turned off at closing time.

An exit sign typically has two 20 watt bulbs that can be replaced with 2.5 watt LED equivalents.

Post a closing checklist To ensure unused lighting (and equipment) is turned off at closing time, provide a checklist for staff that identifies each item that should be turned off.
