Albright will be attempting to open the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2012 season. The Lions began that year with three consecutive victories over Kean, Stevenson and Wilkes.
Versus the Pride
Widener leads the all-time series with Albright 43-18, but the Lions have posted a 4-4 record against the Pride under the direction of head coach John Marzka. Widener defeated Albright 41-23 last season in Chester, Pa., but the Lions won the last meeting in Shirk Stadium 33-19.
Last Time at Shirk
The last time Widener and Albright met at Shirk Stadium the Lions emerged with a 33-19 victory. Trailing 19-17 midway through the third quarter, the Lions scored the final 16 points of the game to pull away for the win. Sean Cunningham salted the game away with a 36-yard touchdown return of a blocked punt.
Tracking Marzka
Albright head coach John Marzka has put together an impressive resume during his nine years at the helm of the Lions program. He has compiled a 60-30 overall record and has advanced to postseason play in seven of his eight seasons. He ranks second only to John Potsklan (144) in career coaching wins at Albright.
Worth Watching
Senior kicker Daniel Sobolewski ranks as one of the top kickers in Albright history. Sobolewski was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List and also was named a preseason Second Team All-American by D3football. com.
Records Watch
Albright senior Daniel Sobolewski is closing in on several school career records. He ranks second in school history in points with 215 and needs just 41 more points this season to break

the record currently held by Dennis Unger. He also is just eight field goals away from breaking the school record of 44 held by Unger.
Block You Very Much
Since John Marzka took the reigns at Albright he has placed an emphasis on productive special teams play. In his eight seasons Albright has blocked a total of 49 kicks and the Lions have posted a record of 31-4 in games in which they have blocked a kick. Albright finished third in the nation with nine blocked kicks last season.
Give Me a Turnover
During the nine years that John Marzka has directed the Albright football program the Lions have amassed a 36-12 record when forcing opponents into at least two turnovers in a game for a 75.0 winning percent. The Lions forced three turnovers in their seasonopening victory over Salisbury.
We Score, We Win
Under the direction of head coach John Marzka, Albright has posted an impressive 40-1 record when scoring at least 30 points in a game. And when the Lions score at least 40 points in a game they have posted a perfect 20-0 record in the last eight years.
Running is Good for Us
In the past nine years, the Albright football team has posted a 30-5 record when averaging at least 4.0 yards per rush in a single game.
Gaining on You
Albright junior kick return specialist Gerrod Gainer ranks as one of the top returners in Division III. Last season, Gainer finished third in the nation with 950 combined kick return yards.
Cough, Cough
Albright senior defensive end Jamal Hayden had a knack for making opponents cough up the football last season. Hayden finished 10th in Division III with four forced fumbles. He
Albright Lions versus Widener Pride (9/19) also recovered two of the four forced fumbles. He began the 2015 season much the same way as he forced a fumble in the Lions 24-23 victory over Salisbury.
Captain, My Captain
The Albright players selected four captains for the 2015 season. The team chose senior linebacker Colton Ryan, senior linebacker Steve Barroso, senior defensive lineman Jamal Hayden and senior tight end Josh MacLeod as captains this season.
Is There a Doctor in the House
Well, not just yet but there will be two soon enough. Albright seniors Colton Ryan and Patrick Wise have both gained early admittance into the Penn State School of Medicine at Hershey. Following graduation this spring, both Ryan and Wise will enter medical school next year.
A Knight to Remember
Albright freshman quarterback had a rather remarkable first start under center for the Lions. He tossed three first-half interceptions as the Lions fell behind 23-3, but then threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns to help lead Albright to a 24-23 victory. Knight finished the game 27-of-42 for 303 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Malik Jackson on an 8-yard scoring pass on fourth down with 2:29 to play to put the Lions ahead for the first time in the game.
Thriller
Albright sophomore wide receiver Malik Jackson also had quite the starting debut. Jackson caught 14 passes for 116 yards and the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. His 14 receptions is tied for fourth most in Albright single-game history.
Five Times Three
Albright’s five-game winning streak last season marked the third time the Lions have reeled off that many wins during the tenure of head coach John
Marzka. The longest winning streak under Marzka came during the 2009 season when the Lions won eight straight to open the season and had won the last game of the 2008 season. Albright won its final four games of the 2013 season and its opener in 2014. The Lions matched that streak by winning five consecutive games in 2014 after beginning the season with a 1-4 record.
Second in the Nation
Albright junior Malik Gilmore finished second in Division III last season with four blocked kicks. He blocked three kicks in the win over FDU-Florham and blocked a potential game-tying field goal with 34 seconds to play against Lebanon Valley to seal the victory.
Leading the Nation
Albright senior linebacker Steve Barroso recovered a pair of fumbles in the Lions victory over Salisbury. His two fumble recoveries leads the nation through two weeks of the season. Both of his recoveries led to Albright touchdowns as the Lions rallied for a 24-23 victory. Barroso was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and was also named to the MAC Honor Roll.
All-Conference Lions
Albright has six players returning that earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors last season. Senior Dan Sobolewski was a first team selection as a kicker and a second team punter. Rich Kuhn, Steve Barroso and Gerrod Gainer earned second team honors. Jamal Hayden and Malik Gilmore were named honorable mention.
He Can Do That Also
Although he is more known for his place kicking, Albright senior Dan Sobolewski is currently ranked fifth in the nation averaging 44.5 yards per punt.

Albright Head Coach John Marzka (9th Season, 60-30) Head coach John Marzka is in his ninth season at the helm of the Albright College football program. Named head coach in 2007, he and his staff inherited a 2-8 team and have since directed one of the most impressive turnarounds in NCAA history. The Lions have amassed a 60-29 record and four post-season wins since Marzka’s arrival. His 74% win ratio prior to the start of the 2010 season was the best for any Albright football coach with at least three seasons leading the program, while his 26 wins are the most of any Lions gridiron coach in his first three years on the job. The 2014 season was another successful one for Albright as Marzka and his staff turned in one of their top coaching performances. The Lions started the season with a 1-4 record before reeling off five consecutive wins to conclude the regular season. Albright earned its seventh postseason trip under Marzka with a berth in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl versus Salisbury. The 2013 season produced a second straight 8-3 record and ECAC bowl victory. A senior-heavy team defeated nationally-ranked Lebanon Valley, falling just short of the MAC championship due to an overtime loss at Lycoming. Senior safety Drew Peterson and sophomore kicker Daniel Sobolewski earned All-American honors from multiple organizations, including Peterson’s selection to the Associated Press Little All-America squad (Albright’s first since 1998). The Lions had 16 All-MAC selections (second-most in program history), two D3football.com All-Region players and four All-ECAC nods. Albright went 8-3 in 2012, making a return trip to the ECAC South-East Bowl. This time the Lions emerged victorious, with a thrilling fourth quarter comeback on the road against Franklin & Marshall. Albright also rallied from 19 points down on the road to defeat #14 Kean University. The 2012 campaign brought 11 All-MAC selections and two All-American nods. Senior wide receiver Scott Pillar was named to the prestigious AFCA Coaches All-America team and signed a rookie free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams in the spring. Marzka led the Lions to a 6-5 mark in 2011 and a spot in the ECAC South-East Bowl. With one of the more difficult schedules in recent team history, all five of Albright’s losses came to teams that went 8-3 or better. Albright set several school and conference records in a 65-26 home win over Wilkes, and quarterback T.J. Luddy set a MAC record for completion percentage in a victory at Stevenson. Albright’s special teams were especially strong, earning two All-Region recognitions (punter Brooks Mitzkewich and gunner Matt Hnatiuk). Additionally, wide receiver Scott Pillar was named to the All-Region and All-ECAC teams, fullback Marty Reinhardt added All-ECAC honors, and Pillar was named a BSN All-American. In 2010, despite finishing with a 5-5 mark overall, Marzka worked extremely hard to develop and mold the future of the Albright football program. In his fourth season with the Lions, Marzka led the Red and White to the program’s first win over Geneva College in over 70 years, as part of the first-ever PAC-MAC Challenge. He also compiled a three-game win streak in the middle of the season, in which the Lions outscored those conference rivals 114-56. Also in that season, junior Josan Holmes added his name to the program’s record books by becoming the all-time and single-season rushing touchdown leader. At the end of the 2010 campaign a combined seven players earned all-conference honors, which was third most in the MAC. The Lions’ 2009 campaign proved to be the most successful season in Albright football history, as the Red and White finished 11-2 and advanced to the 3rd round of the NCAA National Playoffs for the first time in school history. Albright’s 11 wins were the most ever in the 103 years of the storied program, while their final ranking of ninth in the country was the school’s highest AFCA national ranking ever. The Lions also ranked 3rd in the final ECAC-Lambert Meadowlands Division III Football Poll after making their first trip to the NCAA playoffs since 1996. In the final regular season game, Albright played themselves into the NCAA tournament with a thrilling come-from-behind, double overtime victory over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) rival Lebanon Valley College 44-43, to finish the regular season at 9-1 and receive an at-large bid to the post-season. In the first round, Albright went on the road to upset higher-seeded Alfred University 35-25. The Lions then traveled to Doylestown, Pa., for round two, to unseat Delaware Valley College 27-3 and avenge their only loss of the regular season. The Lions’ run came to an end in the national quarterfinals versus eventual runner-up Mount Union College in Alliance, OH. This record-setting season produced 10 All-Conference selections, three D3football.com All-East Region honorees, three ECAC 1st Team All-Stars, MAC Offensive Player of the Year, ECAC Southeast Player of the Year, ECAC overall Division III Player of the Year, D3football.com East Region Player of the Year and one D3football.com All-American selection. Additionally, among D3football.com and the ECAC and MAC Conferences, the Lions earned 12 “Player of the Week” honors for outstanding individual game performances in 2009. Most importantly, the Red and White put 11 Lions on the MAC Academic Honor Roll, and 32 student-athletes attained a 3.0 GPA or higher for the fall 2009 semester. In recognition of his leadership, Marzka was named the 2009 John C. Whitehead / Nike NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. In accepting the award, Marzka responded, “This is quite an honor, but it is merely a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our coaching staff and student-athletes towards reaching their full potential. When you are able to provide an environment where each player can strive daily to reach his full potential as a person, as a student and as an athlete, the results on the field and the accolades simply take care of themselves.” In 2008, Marzka led the Lions to the program’s first MAC Championship in 11 years. Outstanding performances again abounded, as Albright boasted eight All-Conference honorees, MAC Rookie of the Year, two All-East Region selections, three Southeast All-Stars and one All-American honoree. Additionally, eight players earned “Player of the Week” honors for individual game production. A 2008 candidate for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award, Marzka led the Lions to their first eight-win season since 1997 and first post-season bowl victory since 2004, as they beat perennial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) power Montclair State University, 42-14, in the ECAC South Central Championship Game. For the fall 2008 semester, Albright placed 13 players on the MAC Academic Honor Roll, while 33 student-athletes attained a 3.0 or higher GPA. In 2007, Marzka’s first season at Albright, he led the Lions to a second place finish in the MAC and an appearance in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl. With a 7-4 record, Marzka and his staff achieved one of the best year-to-year turnarounds in all of Division III, as the Red and White won 5 more games than in the previous season. Along the way, the Lions produced eight All-Conference selections, the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, two All-East Region honorees, one All-American and one Academic All-American selection. Individual Lions received “Player of the Week” recognition a total of 16 times, 11 student-athletes were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll and 33 players achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA for the fall 2007 semester. A native of Erie, Pa., Marzka earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Allegheny College in 1991. He was a three-year letter winner and two-year starter at center for the Gators, and served as senior co-captain on the 1990 NCAA Division III National Championship team. Marzka was a two time first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) selection as offensive center and named a Champion 1st Team All-American as a senior, after garnering honorable mention All-American honors his junior year. Marzka, the 1990 Claire Jackson Outstanding Offensive Lineman recipient, also helped the Gators earn three NCAC Championships, two trips to the NCAA Playoffs and a 36-7-2 overall record during his playing career.

Wise, who was making his first career start, finished the game 25-36 for 265 yards and two touchdowns and helped Albright dig out of a huge early deficit. Widener jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the first quarter before the Lions mounted a comeback. The Albright special teams jump started the comeback as Colton Ryan blocked a Michael Bennett punt and Danny Tighe recovered at the Widener 23 yard line. Wise capped a 6-play, 23-yard drive with a 11 yard hookup to Andrew Romeo. The point after kick by Daniel Sobolewski trimmed the Pride lead to 28-14 with 9:36 to play in the second quarter. The Albright defense, which surrendered 257 yards of offense in the first quarter, forced a Widener punt on its next possession and the Lions took over on their own 45-yard line. Albright marched to the Widener 15 before the drive stalled and the Lions settled for a 32-yard field goal from Sobolewski cutting the lead to 28-17 with 3:10 left in the second quarter. The Lions threatened to further cut into the lead late in the third quarter. Starting at their own 30-yard line, the Lions moved the ball to the Widener 18 but fumbled the ball on a reverse which was recovered by Widener at the 11-yard line by Jarard Stewart. Widener quarterback Seth Klein completed a 55-yard pass to Anthony Davis on the first play following the fumble, which moved the ball to the Albright 34. Seven plays later, Klein sneaked in for a touchdown pushing the Widener lead to 34-17 with 13:20 to play in the game. Wise was 4-5 for 29 yards during a 8-play, 51-yard march that resulted in Wise connecting with Gerrod Gainer from nine yards out to cut the Widener lead to 34-23 with 5:27 to play. Widener answered with a 7-play, 49-yard march that consumed 3:38 and was capped by Klein finding Morrison for 17 yards and a touchdown to push the margin to 41-23.
