LISTENING TO SOUNDS
• This lesson will help develop student’s listening skills and awareness of sounds.
• Tell students they need to be good listeners. Tell them to
show how good they are at listening by remembering the sounds they hear when they listen for a few minutes.
• Ask students to cover their eyes while you make a noise like opening a window, tearing paper, or pouring liquid.
• By listening carefully and without peeking, ask the students to try to identify the noise.
LISTENING TO SOUNDS
• Next, make two noises, one after the
other. Ask students to guess, without peeking, the two sounds.
• They should say "There were two
sounds, first we heard ____, and then we heard ____."
• After students have mastered two
noises, produce a series of more than two for them to identify in order.
• Finally, make a series of sounds. Then
repeat them, but leave out one of the sounds. Students must identify the sound that has been left out the second time.

LISTENING TO SOUNDS
• Describe an animal but do not tell students what it is. Say, for example: “This animal has horns, four legs and a tail.”
• Ask them to say which animal it is. Then
they should make the noise they think the animal makes.
• When they are familiar with the activity, let individual students take the part of the teacher and describe the animal for the others to name.

• The
object of the game is for the last student to be able to correctly say what the word or phrase was when it started.

LISTENING TO SOUNDS • Tell
the students that they are going to play a game called “I Spy Names.”
• The
students sit in a circle. Start the game by saying “I spy someone whose name begins with…” and give the sound of the first letter, for example /m/ for Michael.
• Then
ask: “Who can it be?” Michael stands, everyone says his name and he carries on the game, saying “I spy someone whose name begins with…,” and so on.
• If
any students call out the name before the student with that name, still let the student whose name it is take the next turn.
• If
students find identifying the first sound too difficult, you can continue to be the starter until they get used to it.
LISTENING TO SOUNDS
• Repeat any of the previous activities
until you are sure that the students have shown that they can be good listeners.
