Objective: Students will be able to identify the steps necessary to become successful on the Listening Section (part 1) of the ELA Regents. Aim: Who cares about part 1 of the ELA Regents? …YOU DO!!! Everyday I’m Listening… Everyday I’m Listening… Literature and Writing Forsyth Satellite Academy ELA w/Zoe & Dave 2.1: Listening

Get Ready: What are the characteristics of a GOOD listener? • Someone who is quiet while the other person speaks. • Someone who is able to answer and ask questions • Someone who thinks about what the other person says.

Listening Skills • You will need to use those listening skills to be successful on part 1 of the Regents Exam.

Part 1 of the Regents: Listening 1.

Someone will read a passage aloud to you TWICE.

2.

YOU will take notes furiously on the paper provided to you during BOTH readings. – Your Goal: To get an understanding of what is happening in the passage as you listen to it.

3.

You will answer 7-10 multiple choice questions based on YOUR notes.

Organize your Notes like THIS: • WRITE these guiding questions on your paper: – – – – – –

Who? (Who is involved?) What? (What is happening) Where? (Where is it taking place?) When? (When is it taking place?) Why? (Why is it happening?) How? (How is it happening?)

• Literary Elements/Techniques: Write down any literary element/technique that you hear – Examples Tone/mood, setting, similes, metaphors, repetition, imagery, characterization…any others?

Your notes sheet should look something like this • • • • • •

Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

2 Notetaking Strategy: The “Hot Dog” Fold • HiwHow

1)

By folding the notepaper in half, we can take notes neatly BOTH times on BOTH sides…

2)

Also, it is FASTER to take notes straight down than all the way across…

3)

Bullets or boxes can be used to add in the 5Ws and 1H too!

“And Then There Was X...I mean A, B, C, or D…”

Here are some of DMX’s Multiple Choice Strategies:

1) Look for key words in the questions to help you find the answers in your notes. 2) A helpful hint to success on these questions: Cover up the answer choices (with a piece of paper) and think of your own answer. You have a better chance of getting the answer right this way! 3) Now, look at the answers and eliminate answer choices that are obviously wrong! Then, find the best answer to the question—it must be completely right!

No need to think “Hard” or be a “Rude Boy” (or Girl) with these awesome Multiple Choice Strategies! (That Rihanna reign just won’t let up…)

1. Employ a “cover-up” strategy by trying to answer a question before looking at the choices. 2. Treat each answer choice as a true or false response. Select the “most true” answer. 3. Rephrase a question as a statement using each answer in the sentence. Which seems most true? 4. When you are unsure of an answer, try to eliminate as many answers as possible. Eliminating one or more choices increases your odds!

Next Steps: 1. Practice Listening Passage with the January 2002 Regents….then for realz with the one from June ‘14; -As the passage is read aloud, take notes using the 5W, 1H format and use the “Hot Dog” Fold method to make notetaking easier. 2. Multiple Choice Questions --Complete on your own 3. Share-Out: What text evidence made you pick your answer?
