One size US J-10 (6 mm) hook, or size to obtain gauge, and one size US H-8 (5mm) hook (for assembly). Yarn needle.
GAUGE One square measures 5 3/4 x 5 3/4"/14.5 x 14.5cm, with larger hook. Note: After all squares are assembled using smaller hook, each square measures closer to 5 1/4 x 5 1/4"/13.5 x 13.5cm.
INSTRUCTIONS SPECIAL STITCHES dFPtr: Drop Front Post Treble Crochet—[Yarn over] twice, insert hook from front to back in indicated ch-1 sp then from back to front into center ring, yarn over and draw lp up and through ch-1 sp (take care that yarn runs between the dc sts in the ring), [yarn over and draw through 2 lps on hook] 3 times.
Picot: (Sc, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook) in indicated st.
SQUARE 1 (make 24) With A, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. Rnd 1 (WS): Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1 here and throughout), [dc in ring, ch 1] 7 times; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch and change to B, turn—8 dc and 8 ch-sps. Rnd 2: With B, ch 4, dFPtr in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [dc in next dc, ch 1, dFPtr in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 7 times; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch and change to C, turn—8 dFPtr. Rnd 3: With C, ch 4, sk first ch-1 sp, [sl st in next st, ch 4, sk next ch-1 sp] 15 times; join with sl st in st at base of beg ch, DO NOT TURN—16 ch-sps. Rnd 4: Sl st into first ch-4 sp, [ch 3, sl st in next ch-4 sp] 16 times; join with sl st in first sl st, turn. Fasten off. Rnd 5: From RS, join D with sc in any ch-3 sp, ch 1, dc in next ch-4 sp of Rnd 3, ch 1, [sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, dc in next ch-4 sp of Rnd 3, ch 1] 15 times; join with sl st in first sc, turn—16 dc, 16 sc, and 32 ch-sps. Rnd 6: [Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, sk next dc, sl st in next sc] 16 times, turn—16 sc. Fasten off. Rnd 7: From RS, working in sc sts and skipping all sl sts, join A with sc in any sc, sc in same sc, ch 2, [2 sc in next sc, ch 2] twice, (dc, [ch 1, dc] 3 times) in next sc, ch 2, *[2 sc in next sc, ch 2] 3 times, (dc, [ch 1, dc] 3 times) in next sc, ch 2; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. SQUARE 2 (make 24) Make same as square 1, working Rnd 1 with D, Rnd 2 with A, Rnds 3 and 4 with B, Rnds 5 and 6 with C, and Rnd 7 with D. FINISHING Arrange squares into 6 rows of 8 squares each, alternating squares throughout. Hold neighboring squares with WS together. With smaller hook and B, working through inner lps only, sc side edges of squares together to assemble rows into strips. Join strips together in same manner. Border—From RS with smaller hook, join C with sc in any center ch of any corner, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook (picot made), [*sk 1 dc, sk next ch, picot in next dc, sk 2 ch, sc in next sc, [picot in next sc, sk 2 ch, sc in next sc] twice, picot in next sc, sk 2 ch, picot in next dc, sk 1 ch, sk next dc, picot in next ch (at corner of current square)**, sk join between squares, picot in center ch of corner of next square; rep from * across edge, ending at ** at the end of each edge] 4 times; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in all ends. Block lightly, if desired.
