PREPARING FABRIC

Little Quilts

Wash fabrics in mild laundry detergent to remove sizing and to preshrink; dry fabrics. (Note: Do not use fabric softener in washer or dryer.) Press fabrics to make cutting out quilt squares easier.

CUTTING OUT QUILT SQUARES

Note: All fabric squares must be cut out straight and on grain so that piecing will be accurate; therefore, it is important to take your time when measuring and cutting. 1. Place fabric right side down on a smooth, flat surface. (Note: If using rotary cutter, place fabric on cutting mat.) Using quilter’s ruler and following grain of fabric, draw a horizontal line approx. 1" from bottom edge of fabric. Place long edge of ruler approx. 1" from left edge of fabric with a horizontal line on the ruler aligned with line drawn on fabric and draw a vertical line. 2. Aligning lines on ruler with pencil lines on fabric, mark determined intervals (given with individual quilt instructions) on horizontal and vertical lines. 3. Aligning grid on ruler with a pencil line on fabric and long edge of ruler with a marked interval, draw required number of squares on each fabric (Fig. 1).

MACHINE PIECING QUILT TOP

When piecing quilt squares, always match right sides and raw edges of fabrics. Use a short, straight stitch and a ¼" seam allowance for all sewing, making sure seam allowances are accurate. Press seam allowances to one side.
