What does this career look like? Your plans and your designs include a combination of productivity, quality and safety. You make recommendations on everything from the best layout of a maintenance shop to the safest way to evacuate people in a fire drill. You use troubleshooting skills and a keen interest in productivity to tackle on-the-job problems. Quality assurance and efficiency are always on the top of your mind. You often work closely with Industrial Engineers to collect and analyze data related to quality. You also work with other Industrial Engineering Technologists to develop applications using computer-assisted drafting (CAD), computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM), computer numerical control (CNC) machines to help make quality more consistent or increase productivity. If you decide to focus on one area, you may become an expert in a certain field such as developing production processes, quality assurance or scheduling.

What would I do? You’re all about efficiency, layouts, processes and schedules. You examine health, safety and fire prevention plans to ensure they would work effectively in an emergency situation. You design plant layouts and production facilities to ensure all people, materials and machines are in the best places for maximum efficiency and safety. You develop quality assurance programs and perform control tests, allowing for consistent production quality. You also create documents, directives, reports and procedures to highlight the ideal processes.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary diploma in industrial engineering technology or a related discipline is typically required. • Certification in industrial engineering or manufacturing technology is available through provincial or territorial associations of engineering/ applied science technologists and may be required for some positions. • A period of supervised work experience, usually two years, is required before certification. • In Quebec, membership in the regulatory body is required to use the title “Professional Technologist.”
HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING • Standard and emergency first aid • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • H2S Alive (depending on work facility) • Fall Protection • Confined Space Entry • Respirator Fit Training
HOW CAN I WORK IN LNG? As Canada prepares for the launch of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, this occupation will play a key role in: • Off-site fabrication • LNG export facility construction • Natural gas pipeline construction When LNG takes off, you can be a part of the action!
