From improving plant production to devising quality assurance programs, you make things better by combining data and science with planning, people skills and design. You know that small changes can have large impacts. You are a creative thinker with a strong practical side. Even the smallest changes you apply to machinery and equipment layouts, workflows and processes can make entire facilities run more efficiently. If this sounds like you, you may be heading for a career in Industrial Engineering Technologist.
What does this career look like? Your plans and your designs include a combination of productivity, quality and safety. You make recommendations on everything from the best layout of a maintenance shop to the safest way to evacuate people in a fire drill. You use troubleshooting skills and a keen interest in productivity to tackle on-the-job problems. Quality assurance and efficiency are always on the top of your mind. You often work closely with Industrial Engineers to collect and analyze data related to quality. You also work with other Industrial Engineering Technologists to develop applications using computer-assisted drafting (CAD), computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM), computer numerical control (CNC) machines to help make quality more consistent or increase productivity. If you decide to focus on one area, you may become an expert in a certain field such as developing production processes, quality assurance or scheduling.

What would I do? You’re all about efficiency, layouts, processes and schedules. You examine health, safety and fire prevention plans to ensure they would work effectively in an emergency situation. You design plant layouts and production facilities to ensure all people, materials and machines are in the best places for maximum efficiency and safety. You develop quality assurance programs and perform control tests, allowing for consistent production quality. You also create documents, directives, reports and procedures to highlight the ideal processes.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary diploma in industrial engineering technology or a related discipline is typically required. • Certification in industrial engineering or manufacturing technology is available through provincial or territorial associations of engineering/ applied science technologists and may be required for some positions. • A period of supervised work experience, usually two years, is required before certification. • In Quebec, membership in the regulatory body is required to use the title “Professional Technologist.”
