LOCAL ECONOMIES Local Business Roundtable

1) Roosevelt Center Merchants Association The Roosevelt Center Merchants Association (RCMA) was registered in December of 2004. The group of local merchants meets monthly with members of the City of Greenbelt Council to discuss topics and improvements for Roosevelt Center. A chair, treasurer, and secretary are chosen from members to direct meetings. Agenda items are solicited from members and discussed at the monthly meetings. Meeting minutes are kept and are found on the Co-op Supermarket and Pharmacy website community page. New merchants to the Roosevelt Center are informed of the RCMA and are added to a member roster email list by current members. This list informs members of the RCMA of upcoming meetings and agenda items. Dues are collected to build an account to develop improvement projects. The RCMA involves members from the local businesses located in Roosevelt Center, members of the City of Greenbelt Council and City government, the Greenbelt Community Development Corporation, and the Greenbelt Police Department. A full list of merchants and interested parties can be seen on the RCMA Distribution List. Proof 1.1: RCMA on CO-OP website

3) Roundtable with Public Works and Beltway Plaza Mall In April 2017, Greenbelt Public Works met with Beltway Plaza Mall to discuss options for recycling contractors and create a plan for sustainability outreach. After the meeting, Beltway Plaza Mall developed and distributed a survey to find out which contractors were being used by different retailers. Results will determine which contractors already offer recycling pickup services and where those recyclable materials are hauled. Retailers who do not already have access to recycling will be directed to choose contracts with haulers who do. The recycling right guidelines will be determined based on capabilities of the recycling facility. Once guidelines have been established, educational materials will be developed and promoted to assist with staff training. Additionally, Public Works and Beltway Plaza Mall developed a plan to sponsor educational outreach tabling events. These events serve to offer the public free reusable shopping bags, and to raise awareness about recycling right, composting, among other sustainability initiatives. There is also a plan to purchase and install equal access to recycling bin infrastructure as an initiative for shoppers to recover more recyclables from the landfill.
