Local engineers honoured at IPWEA Excellence Awards IPWEA NSW Media Release, 23 October 2015 The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia NSW Division have announced the winners of the 2015 Engineering Excellence Awards. The Annual IPWEA NSW Excellence Awards on 15 October 2015 recognised excellence in public works engineering across New South Wales, with regional and metropolitan councils well-represented in the ten award categories and two individual prizes. IPWEA NSW Chief Executive Officer John Roydhouse praised the standard of the projects being recognised. “The work that engineers in local government do requires a tremendous amount of talent and expertise. It’s exciting at this time of reform to see our local engineers leading in innovation and infrastructure delivery,” Mr Roydhouse said. “With engineers across NSW being honoured this year’s awards are a testament to the excellence that characterises the work of engineers in local government.” The design and construction of the Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre was recognised as Public Works Project of the Year. “The construction of the Library and Knowledge Centre has transformed Bankstown’s civic precent into a vibrant hub for the community, and is a perfect example of how local government engineers can invigorate their communities,” Mr Roydhouse said. The Public Works Leader of the Year Award went to George Bounassif of Randwick City Council, who has transformed Randwick’s Infrastructure Services section into a modern and high-performing department. The David Abbott Award for Under-35s was awarded to Nicola Daaboul from Bankstown City Council, where she has lead the development and management of asset management strategies and systems. “By excelling in a traditionally male-dominated field, Ms Daaboul’s enthusiasm and passion is an inspiration to other young women seeking a career in engineering.” Mr Roydhouse said. The University of New England and Armidale Dumersq Council have also been recognised with the Special Award recognising the launch of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology with Civil and Environmental majors, aimed at addressing the skills shortage in the sector.
