Lockheed Martin Supports FIRST Robotics POSTED ON APRIL 12, 2017 Story Highlights The 2017 Orlando Regional FIRST Robotics Competition was held at the CFE Arena on March 9- March 11. The 2017 Dallas Regional FIRST Robotics Competition was held the same weekend at the Irving Convention Center. Lockheed Martin served as a sponsor for both competitions. FIRST Robotics inspires high school students around the world to become technology leaders.

Lockheed Martin is proud to be a sponsor of FIRST Robotics. Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology, FIRST Robotics is often referred to as the ultimate “Sport for the Mind." Under strict rules, limited resources and an intense six-week time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Lockheed Martin mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team with the ultimate goal of leading their team to an exciting FIRST Championship. High school student participants call this challenging educational experience “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”
Orlando
The Orlando Regional Competition is held every spring at the CFE Arena at the University of Central Florida. This year, more than 60 teams coming from high schools from around the world battled headto-head, as they constructed robots that weigh up to 120 lbs. to compete in the playing field challenges. Out of the 60 teams, there were 15 Lockheed Martin supported teams! This competition inspires the students to use their innovative minds and gets them passionate about STEM careers. During the six-week build leading up to the competition, students get the opportunity to learn from professional engineers, use cutting-edge software/hardware, qualify for scholarships, and winners get a chance to move on to the Championship competition in Houston this month.

This year marked another great regional. Lockheed Martin-supported team 4-H Exploding Bacon Robotics (FIRST Team 1902) received the Chairman’s Award. This is the most prestigious award you can receive at the regional competition. This award qualifies the team to attend the FIRST Championship in Houston, where they will compete not only on the field, but for the Championship Chairman’s Award.

Another Lockheed Martin-supported team, the Moose (FIRST Team 1065) were selected by one of the top-seeded teams to be on an alliance for elimination matches. The alliance was knocked out in the semi-finals, but The Moose was awarded the Creativity Award. Kaitlyn Bowman, a student on GRA-V Robotics (also supported by Lockheed Martin) received one of two Dean’s List Awards. She will attend Championship and compete to be a Championship Dean’s List Award winner. The Lockheed Martin supported teams competed in South Florida, Orlando and Dallas during the first two weeks of the competition. So far, four Lockheed Martin teams are attending Championship and two Dean’s list finalists. In addition to all the great accomplishments of the supported Lockheed Martin teams, the Volunteer of the Year for the Orlando Regional was from one of our supported teams, Phu Nguyen from The Moose.
Dallas
Lockheed Martin MFC employees serving as mentors, coaches, judges, and all-around volunteers once again participated in the FIRST Robotics Regional competition in the Dallas area held March 8 - 11. This was the ninth year Lockheed Martin has sponsored and served at this event. "FIRST Robotics is a terrific program that gives students complicated engineering challenges with realistic constraints - limited resources, ridiculous schedules and ambiguous requirements. It's always amazing to see what creative solutions the teams come up with," Mike Kircher, MFC engineer and long-time FIRST coach said.

Lockheed Martin sponsored six teams competing at the Dallas regional this year. Two sponsored teams, Haltom Robotics (Team #6133) and the Robo Vikes (Team #4206) ranked two and four respectively out of the 54 teams competing. Both teams were named Regional Winners and qualified to travel on to the Championship competition which will be held in Houston April 19 - 22.
