Havilah Chowdhury, a senior at Man High School, and her mother Angie, are greeted by Ron Lemon during a Donor/Scholarship Tribute Reception recently held at the Logan Campus of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The reception provided the perfect venue for donors to meet with scholarship recipients and their families. Banner Staff Report MT. GAY — Giving back to help future students was the theme of the Donor/Scholarship Tribute Reception hosted by the Southern West Virginia Community College Foundation. The event, which brought together donors and their scholarship recipients, took place on Sunday, April 26, at the college's Logan Campus. Special recognition was given to a host of foundation donors, 40 scholarship recipients, their families and friends during introductions by Ronald E. Lemon, vice-president for development at Southern. He said the first annual event was a huge success and provided the perfect opportunity for donors to meet and talk with students. "We are very proud of the many students supported by the Southern Foundation. Our financial support has grown over the past few years and we've had exceptional scholarship growth with our Vision 2020 Major Gifts Campaign. The Southern Foundation is blessed to have leaders like George and Elizabeth Kostas, Eddie Canterbury, Clell Peyton, David Scott, Tank Williams, Eddie Curry, Mark Mareske, Phyllis Osenton and Marjorie Oakley as board members," Lemon said. The Southern Foundation has established numerous scholarships for local students in Logan, Mingo, Boone, Lincoln, Wyoming, Wayne, McDowell and Raleigh counties. The program speaker was retired educator William L. "Tank" Williams, Jr. who was employed by the Logan County Board of Education for 40 years. He stressed the importance of "remembering where you came from" and encouraged everyone to give back in order to help others attend college and receive a quality education. Williams shared a personal story of helping a young man enter into the engineering/construction field. He explained that there is always someone behind the scene making it possible for students to go to college and later obtain good paying jobs. "I worked and raised my family in Logan County. It is a great area with wonderful people. Always remember that it is important to

give back to the community that helped you, so that you can help future generations." Williams said. He encouraged the students to continue their pursuit of higher education and learning throughout their lives. Southern President Joanne Jaeger Tomblin said the Foundation has tripled its financial support in recent years, giving over $195,000 to fund student scholarships. Also, through the efforts of the college's Vision 2020 Major Gifts Campaign, over seven million dollars has been pledged by donors in less than two years. That kind of support has allowed the college to expand programs at all of its campus locations and increase student financial assistance. "During these financially trying times, we are grateful to our donors for supporting the college, and most importantly, our students. Our donors understand the advantages of an educated work force and employers in today's job market are looking for technically trained people," Tomblin stated. President Tomblin said statistics prove that students who begin their education at a community college do much better when they transfer to a four year college than those who go directly to a university. "We're accredited, affordable, and close to home." Southern's Foundation President George Kostas provided closing remarks by using an empty cup as a prop to explain the importance of giving. "An empty cup is not worth a whole lot unless you put something in it. Please encourage your fellow classmates, family and friends to get an education; that is so important. And we have the best resource right here in our back door, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The quality is here and you have people at Southern that really care about you," Kostas said.
