Amy Weststeyn and Joclyn Kirton were two of biola’s four 2013 NAIA All-Americans. Chelsea Arnitz and Gracee Gallarda were the others; both graduated in the spring.
iola volleyball has won no fewer than 23 matches in each season since 2007. Head Coach Aaron Seltzer enters the 2014 season with a team that has won just about 75 percent of its matches during his 12-year tenure as the head coach. Biola has cemented itself as one of the top few programs in all of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, with deep national postseason runs in each of the previous four seasons. 2014 is just as little bit different though, as it is likely the last time Biola will have a chance to prove itself against the top-tier competition the NAIA has to offer, as many top programs, including Biola’s GSAC-rival Concordia-Irvine, are leaving the NAIA at year’s-end. The season begins with a different challenge, which is a simple as getting this national
powerhouse back on track and in position to be able to make yet another deep postseason run. There is no postseason without solid performances throughout preseason games like this one, and in-conference games later in the year. Biola will lean heavily on Middle Blocker Amy Weststeyn and Outside Hitter Joclyn Kirton in this match and throughout the season, as both players are returning NAIA All-Americans. The rest is up to Seltzer, who is the returning NAIA Coach of the Year, but must figure out who the right pieces are to put another winning team out on the court. He lost two of his four 2013 NAIA All-Americans to graduation, but he brought in three brand new players (Ashton Arbuthnot, Tess Van Grouw and Allison Spencer) to help the returning players fill that gap. ponent in the Viterbo V-Hawks. The V-Hawks worked their way to a 33-12 overall record in 2013, before bowing out to Grand View University in the Midwest Collegiate Conference finals, barely missing out on a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. Biola actually faced Grand View in the NAIA Quarterfinals, and the Eagles worked a convincing 3-0 victory over the Vikings at the Tyson Events Center. Today’s two teams seem fairly evenly matched, when you consider their team statistics from a year ago. While Biola has a slight edge in kills and assists per set, the V-Hawks excel at defense, leading big in digs per set, which will help them deal with Biola’s big boppers. However, Viterbo has already played three matches in the last two days, which could make them less agile in dealing with Biola’s attacks.

Her time at Biola has seen her accumulate a bunch of these awards, and her impact has been felt all over the Biola record book. This season, she has a chance to eclipse career totals of 1,000 kills, 2,000 attacks, 100 service aces, 100 solo blocks, 500 total blocks and 1,500 points. She would become just the third player in program history to finish with 1,000+ kills and 100+ solo blocks.
