PERSIAN SQUARE AFGHAN Finished Size: Approximately 47½” x 67”
MATERIALS
Worsted weight yarn [approximately 220 meters (240 yards) per ball] 13 balls Crochet hook, size H (5.00) or size needed for gauge Yarn needle GAUGE: One Square = 6½” DO NOT HESITATE TO CHANGE HOOK SIZE TO OBTAIN CORRECT GAUGE.
JOINING
Afghan is assembled by joining 10 Squares into 7 vertical strips and then by joining strips. Lay out Squares alternating the direction of rows, with the markers at right or at bottom (see Chart). Join Squares as follows: Place two Squares with wrong sides together. Using yarn needle, working in Back Loops Only of both Squares and beginning in corner st, insert needle from right to left through first st, insert needle from right to left through next st (Fig. 1); repeat from across. BASIC SQUARE (Make 70)
Ch 13 loosely. Row 1 (Right side): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 12 sc. Note: Loop a short piece of yarn around any stitch to mark last row as right side. Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in first st, insert hook in same st and pull up a loop, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook; repeat from across: 12 sts. Rows 3-15: Repeat Row 2.
AFGHAN EDGING
Rnd 1: With right side facing and working in Back Loops Only, join yarn with slip st in any corner ch-1, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same st, dc in each st across to next corner ch-1, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next corner ch-1, dc in each st across to next corner ch-1;- repeat from around; join with slip st to top of beginning ch-3. Rnd 2: Ch 3, working in both loops, dc in next dc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, dc in each dc across to next corner; repeat from around; join with slip st to top of beginning ch-3, finish off.

PATTERN STITCHES
Front Post DC (abbreviated FPdc) YO, insert book from front to back around post of next dc, YO and pull up a loop (Fig. 2a), (YO and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Back Post DC (abbreviated BPdc) YO, insert hook from back to front around post of next dc, YO and pull up a loop (Fig. 2b), (YO and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Fig. 2a

Note: Entire Afghan is worked in one piece from side to side. Ch 222 loosely. Row 1 (Right side): Dc in fourth ch from hook and in each ch across: 220 sts. Rows 2 and 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), turn; dc in next dc and in each dc across. Row 4: Ch 3, turn; (work BPdc around post of next dc, work FPdc around post of next dc) across to last dc, dc in last dc. Rows 5 and 6: Ch 3, turn; dc in next st and in each st across. Row 7: Ch 3, turn; skip next 2 dc, (3 dc in next dc, skip next 2 dc) across to last dc, dc in last dc: 72 3-dc groups. Row 8: Ch 1, turn; sc in first 2 dc, (work Cluster in next dc, sc in next 2 dc) across: 72 Clusters. Row 9: Ch 3, turn; dc in next sc, (ch 1, dc in next 2 sc) across. Row 10: Ch 1, turn; sc in first 2 dc, (work Cluster in next ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 dc) across. Row 11: Ch 5 (counts as first dc plus ch 2), turn; (decrease, ch 2) across to last sc, dc in last sc. Row 12: Ch 1, turn;- sc in each ch and in each st across: 220 sc. Row 13: Ch 3, turn; dc in next sc and in each sc across. Repeat Rows 2-13 for pattern until Afghan measures approximately 46½”, ending by working Row 6. Finish off.
FRINGE
Cut a piece of cardboard 5” square. Wind the yarn loosely and evenly around the cardboard, then cut across one end when the card is filled; repeat as needed. Hold four strands together and fold in half. With wrong side facing and using a crochet hook, draw the folded end up through the end of a row (Fig. 5a), and pull the loose ends through the folded end; draw the knot up tightly (Fig. 5b). Attach Fringe evenly across both ends of Afghan. Lay Afghan flat on a hard surface and trim the ends. Fig. 5a
