A machine that breeds maggots for your dinner table could soon be found on a kitchen counter near you. The woman behind the Farm 432 device is Katharina Unger, an Industrial Design graduate of University of Applied Arts in Vienna, who wants to tackle the factory farmed meat industry through growing your own protein at home. It is claimed the Farm 432 can harvest half a kilogram of larvae every week, which is enough for two meals. While the current design is for home use, the system can be scaled up for professional kitchens. Katharina Unger described the cooked larvae as smelling like starchy potatoes with a nutty and meaty taste. Black Soldier flies were chosen as they are easy to breed and contain up to 42 per-cent protein and a high level of calcium and amino acids. A gram of Black Soldier fly eggs can become 2.4 kilograms of edible protein after 432 hours in the Farm 432. The machine is designed to be the perfect environment for flies and their larvae allowing in enough light and space for them to grow. Food scent comes into the machine through the fly fun park nozzles based on insect attracting plants, which encourages flies to lay eggs whilst providing water and space. After three to four days, the flies lay eggs into the nozzles named baby tube and in a hundred hours time, the hatched larvae fall into the body of the machine where they feed on vegetable scraps from the kitchen for the next two weeks. As the larvae eat the vegetable waste they turn the scraps into compost liquid, which when diluted can be used as a plant fertilizer. Talking about the inspiration behind her design, Miss Unger said: I wanted to tackle the issue of the growing meat demand and its result in unsustainable and unethical meat production. By 2050 meat production will have to increase by 50 per cent. Considering we already use one third of croplands for the production of animal feed, we will have to look for alternative food sources and alternative ways of growing it. In the end it is not only about producing food, but also about the adventure of growing live animals in your home! It is about making people see that there is a great variety of food on our planet that we rarely consider. As people get more conscious about what they eat and where it comes from, the DIY food movement gains more importance.
