Maize Rec. Basketball Rules 2017-2018 1. Official Basketball Rules as published by the National Federation of State High School Associations are official except where a league rule is in conflict. 2. Maize Recreation Youth Basketball is for children who live in USD 266 boundaries or attend Maize schools. Anyone found not abiding by this requirement will be dismissed from the league, no refund and the team they are participating on will forfeit all games. 3. There may only be 2 players on a team that play in another basketball league. Rosters are final after November 21st, 2016. No additions will be made after November 21st. 4. ALL PLAYERS MUST PLAY A CONTINUOUS QUARTER (full 6 minutes for 2 nd-4th grades OR 8 minutes for 5th/6th grades). Exception: If a player becomes sick, is ejected, or fouls out in one quarter, this rule is waived for that player. Violations will result in a forfeit. 5. ALL PLAYERS MUST SIT OUT A CONTINUOUS QUARTER (full 6 minutes for 2 nd-4th grades OR 8 minutes for 5th/6th grades). Exception: If, due to illness or other exceptional circumstances, one team has 6 or fewer players at a game, this rule will be waived with consent of both coaches in consultation with the scorekeeper and referee. However, if there are 6 players, all players must still sit out part of the game, so that no one player plays all 4 quarters. Teams with 5 or fewer players may have all players play the entire game with the consent of the opposing coach. Violation will result in a forfeit. 6. Goals: 2nd, 3rd & 4th grades: 8 1/2 feet, 5th & 6th, grade: 10 feet. 7. Ball: 28.5oz ball. Game balls provided by league. 8. Time outs: 2-30 second time outs per half for each team. No carryover. Overtime: 130 second time out. 9. Fouls: 1 & 1 foul shot comes into effect on the 5th team foul of each half. It will remain 1 & 1 foul shot no matter how many fouls the team has (no shooting 2). A player fouls out on the 5th personal foul ruled against him/her. 10.Score: Score will be kept for all age divisions. Scoreboards will be set to 0 with a 20 point lead in the second half. Score will not be reset until the lead is cut to 10 points. 11.3 point shots: All shots in 2nd-4th grade are 2 point shots. 5th & 6th graders receive 3 points for shots made beyond the 3-point arc. 12.Lane violation is 5 seconds. 13.Player substitutions may be made during dead-ball situations. 14.2nd, 3rd, & 4th grades will play 6 minute quarters with a continuously running clock. Clock will stop for free throws, team timeouts, official timeouts, and in all dead-ball situations in the final two minutes of the second and fourth quarters. (Losing coach may ask for the clock to be kept running if losing team is behind by 10 or more points in the 4th quarter only.)
Maize Rec. Basketball Rules 2017-2018 Continued 15.5th & 6th graders will play 8 minute quarters with a continuously running clock. Clock will stop for free throws, team timeouts, official timeouts, and in all dead-ball situations in the final two minutes of the second and fourth quarters. (Losing coach may ask for the clock to be kept running if losing team is behind by 10 or more points.) 16. 2nd & 3rd boys AND 2nd & 3rd girls are allowed to play man to man or zone defense. Stealing while an opponent is dribbling or passing the ball is allowed as long as no foul is committed. Defenders hands will not be allowed to be on their opponent at any time. This rule will be strictly enforced. 17.2nd & 3rd boys AND 2nd& 3rd will only be allowed to trap or provide help defense inside the 3-point line. Any trapping or help defense outside of the 3-point line will be a violation. The defensive team will receive two warnings. The 3 rd will result in a technical foul. 18.Pressure defense: (a) 2nd & 3rd grade boys AND 2nd & 3rdgrade girls have NO full court pressure at any time. (b) 4th grade boys AND girls will require defense to drop behind the three point line if the team is ahead by 10 points or more. If a team has a 20 or more point lead, the scoreboard will be set back to 0 (zero) but the actual score will be kept correct in the scorebook. Full court pressure is allowed in the 4th quarter if neither of the previous statements applies. (c) 5th & 6th grade may have full court pressure the entire game unless a team has a lead of 10 or more points. If a team has a lead of 10 or more points they must defend behind the half court line. If a team has a 20 or more point lead, the scoreboard will be set back to 0 (zero) but the actual score will be kept correct in the scorebook. 19.Half time break will be 4 minutes. 20.Breaks following the first and third quarters will be 1 minute. 21.In case of a tie after regulation, there will be one (1) two minute overtime. If game is tied after following overtime, it will go into sudden death with the first team to score being declared the winner. 22.Official’s decisions are final. 23.A player receiving a technical foul will be required to leave the game for 2 minutes of playing time. A second technical on a coach or player will result in the coach or player leaving the premises. 24.Officials: Referees must be 15 years or older. Scorekeepers and timekeepers must be 14 years or older.
