M akalu W inter A ttem pt. R einhold M essner and Hans K am m erlander tried to m ake the first w inter ascent o f the w orld’s fifth highest m ountain but failed. They made three attem pts on the northw est ridge, the K ukuczka route, reaching 7500 m eters on the third try. “Storm s and poor visibility forced us to retreat,”

said M essner at a press conference in K athm andu on February 12, 1986. They had flown to K athm andu from Base C am p by helicopter. The two South Tiroleans made a sad discovery, finding on the slopes o f K angchungtse (M akalu II) the bodies o f the French clim bers, Pierre D em olom be and M arcel M argaine, m issing since N ovem ber 2. T heir bodies were found at 7100 and 7450 m eters.
