[email protected] This week’s topic relates to the school district portion of your property tax rate. The average taxpayer understands that a school district’s tax rate is a portion of the total property tax rate. The remainder of the total property tax rate is typically comprised of rates for fire/police protection, public library, city/municipality, and others. Interestingly, when comparing our school district tax rate with neighboring school districts, Mahomet‐ Seymour consistently ranks thirteenth lowest out of fifteen, as illustrated in the chart below (Source: Regional Office of Education #9). In fact, since Champaign School District recently passed a school bond tax referendum, it is expected that Mahomet‐Seymour will become the fourteenth lowest out of fifteen in terms of school district tax rate next year. Overall, we are very proud of the quality of education our School District provides and the value by which we provide it. Nonetheless, as State education funding continues to fall short year after year, our Board of Education and administration considers how much longer we can levy at this comparatively low rate. After all, Mahomet‐ Seymour has maintained a relatively flat tax rate since 1988 (see chart below). Time will tell as we continue to monitor the education funding reform discussions amongst lawmakers in Springfield.
