NEWSFLASH ENGLISH WEEK

APSS

English Week this year was held from April 18th-22nd. All students took part in the run-up to the finals for the events. Secondary 1 students were involved in Choral Speaking while the Secondary 2 and 3 students were involved in debates. The Secondary 4 and 5 students also took part in debates but they had a lot of fun getting ready for the drama, dual acting and speech competitions as well. Winning was not the most important element; it was the desire to take part, work in teams, and improve their spoken English that were uppermost in the students'

NEWSFLASH! NTV7 BELLA’S TALK

On 22nd February 2016, my mother, my siblings and I were interviewed live on NTV7’s Bella Talk Show. We were there to talk about our experience distributing meals to our street friends whom consist of the needy, the homeless, the urban poor and the handicapped. My mother and I were part of the team called Feeding The Needy (FTN). FTN is a non-governmental organization that feeds our street friends in Kuala Lumpur. FTN comprises of working and non-working team members who commit their time every Thursday night from 8:30p.m. to 10:30p.m. to feed our street friends. FTN distributes in front of CIMB bank on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, near to Tune Hotel. Our street friends gather at the place of distribution as early as 7:30p.m. Around 8:30p.m., FTN team members and volunteers setup tables and arrange the meals whilst the street friends form a few lines according to different categories such as elderlies, handicapped, families. FTN distributes wholesome meals which consist of rice, meat such as chicken and fish, and a bottle of mineral water. Occasionally, the sponsors also provide sides such as buns, fruits, cupcakes and cookies. FTN also organises birthday celebrations for our street friends every once a month. After distribution, all team members and volunteers clean up the entire distribution area. I joined the FTN team in January 2015. Initially, I followed my mother and older brother who started in early 2014 to observe what they do at the distribution place. I felt scared at first because the street friends were strangers to me but after a while, I became familiar with the children there. I talk to the children and make friends with them and sometimes even play football with them. Nowadays, every Thursday, I get excited and look forward to meeting my street friends because it makes me feel grateful for what I have and it makes me realize that I have much more than enough. I also feel very happy because to me, the best form of happiness can be achieved by making other people happy, which in this case, is by giving my street friends whatever I can afford to contribute. You can get free access to the whole recording of the talk show at www.tonton.com.my, titled Bella (2016) – Episode 31.

Newsflash "On 18-20 Feb, APSS won the bronze medal for Debate at the 38th SEA-Forensics tournament held at ISKL. It was an exciting semi-finals, going against the defending champion Kolej Tuanku Jaafar. Runner up was ISKL. APSS debaters were Ali Azmi, Audrey Lee and Zhafyra Irdina. The organizers praised APSS for doing a fantastic job of reaching the semi-finals on their first outing as debaters at the tournament. Previously the school had always been observers, never participants. Let's hope for a great showing at other events besides debating in the tournament next year!"
