THE  RENEGADE  PASTOR’S  STRESS  MANAGEMENT   SEMINAR

by  NELSON  SEARCY

INTRODUCTION     Stress  causes  damage  to:           -‐ Relationships           -‐ Spiritual  Life           High  Stress  makes  you  worse  than  you  are.           Low  Stress  makes  you  better  than  you  are.

Three  Truths  About  Ministry  and  Stress:         1. There  is  no  such  thing  as  a  stress  free  life  (ministry.)       The  issue  is  not  can  I  eliminate  stress  but  how  can  I  manage  stress.       John  16:33   In  this  world  you  will  have  trouble  -‐  Jesus           2. Ministry  on  its  best  day  is  stressful.             3. You  are  never  going  to  get  it  all  done.

10  Ideas  for  Managing  the  Stress  of  Ministry:

1. Understand  the  difference  between  good  stress  and  bad  stress.         Eustress:    this  is  the  good  stress  in  your  life.           It  makes  you  more  of  the  person  God  wants  you  to  be.

2. Get  clear  on  the  source  of  the  stress.               Philippians  4:6   Don’t  worry  about  anything;  instead,  pray  about  everything.  Tell  God  what  you   need,  and  thank  him  for  all  he  has  done.                 You  cannot  control  the  situation,  but  you  can  control  your  response  to  the   situation.

  3. Manage  my  time  well.    You  will  be  able  to  expand  your  tolerance  of       stress  by  managing  your  time  well.         Tips:       A. Don’t  start  the  day  until  you  finish  the  day.         -‐ Write  the  ‘to-‐do’  list.         -‐ Prioritize  the  ‘to-‐do’  list.       B. Eat  the  Frog     That  which  is  more  stressful  but  lesser  priority  –  just  go  ahead  and  take  care   of  it.       C. Live  off  peak     The  abuse  of  time  is  one  of  the  greatest  causes  of  stress.       To  maximize  your  time  –  look  for  opportunities  to  eliminate  wait.

A  SYSTEM  is  anything  that:       Saves         You         Stress         Time         Energy           Money

  4. Practice  Positive  Self-‐Talk           When  stress  comes  into  your  life,  it’s  like  a  flame.         2  Corinthians  10:5   We  take  captive  every  thought  to  make  it  obedient  to  Christ.           Replace  your  negative  self-‐talk  with  Scriptural  talk.

  5. Take  mini-‐breaks  but  not  too  many  breaks.

-‐ Take  a  walk

-‐ Breathe

6. Learn  to  rest.       Learning  to  rest  means  finding  a  way  to  end  your  day.         Practice  the  “Big  Sleep”:    add  an  hour  or  two  hours  earlier  to  the  time  you  fall   asleep  and  sleep  longer  than  needed.

  7. Take  care  of  yourself  physically.         When  you  exercise  it  will  lower  your  stress.                       8. Take  time  to  decompress  every  day.         As  you  switch  gears  throughout  the  day,  there  are  things  that  you  do  that  are   very  stressful  and  there  are  things  that  you  do  that  are  not  very  stressful.     Avoid  carrying  the  stress  from  one  meeting  to  the  next.         Transition  times  are  decompression  times  in  your  day  and  in  your  domains.     Have  a  decompression  time  between  home  and  office.

  9. Talk  to  others  about  your  stress.    (Talk  to  the  right  person  about   your  stress.)         You  need  someone  to  ground  you  in  your  stress.       G  –  A  –  P:    Gain  Another  Perspective           10. Praise  God  through  the  Stress.       Give  God  thanks  and  praise  for  the  opportunity  for  growth.       Jonah  2:9-‐10   But  I,  with  shouts  of  grateful  praise,  will  sacrifice  to  you.    What  I  have  vowed  I   will  make  good.    I  will  say,  ‘Salvation  comes  from  the  Lord.’”    And  the  Lord   commanded  the  fish,  and  it  vomited  Jonah  onto  dry  land.         Acts  16:26   Around  midnight  Paul  and  Silas  were  praying  and  singing  hymns  to  God,  and  the   other  prisoners  were  listening.    Suddenly,  there  was  a  massive  earthquake,  and   the  prison  was  shaken  to  its  foundations.  All  the  doors  immediately  flew  open,   and  the  chains  of  every  prisoner  fell  off!
