•Written feedback was gathered after the session , as follows. There was only a 50% response rate, as students were not obliged to complete it.
What were you hoping to get from the workshop? •Better understanding of NHS •Better understanding of new legislation •Insight into training opportunities •Did the session address this? Yes •What were positive aspects of the session? • interactive •provided good overview •What could have been done differently? •More time to cover topics in more detail •Introduction to clinical year more important than introducing foundation year •Mixed response to debate- enjoyable but too long, or not enough knowledge to participate
Discussion •This pilot workshop effectively addressed the need of medical students to understand the NHS. This would improve their role in “Doctor as Professional” (GMC 2009) •We intend to provide opportunities for discussion and familiarisation with the NHS in phase 1 as a means of introducing and preparing students for their clinical years, with a further discussion opportunity in year 3 to help students •begin to prepare for working in the NHS as a qualified doctor

•The session was a voluntary sign up for year 2 medical students at Manchester Medical School •It was piloted during the “introduction to phase 2” part of curriculum and consisted of 2 workshops, delivered to 30 students •The workshop was delivered as an interactive power point presentation, covering NHS history and structure, and outline of the health and social care act. There was also clarification of terms such as commission, and regulatory bodies such as the care quality commission (CQC) and Monitor •Based on the information provided, students then had an opportunity to debate that “this house believes that the health and social care act is good for the NHS.” •Students were then signposted to organisations that they could get involved in, to increase their awareness of the topic. •There was a brief outline of foundation and specialist trainee jobs and their organisation, utilising information from the local deanery.
