Conceived as a hideaway and designed for modern, easy living, the Lake Chelan Retreat embodies “camp life” and a family’s
love for the outdoors. After roughing it on the property for 8 years in a 32-foot Airstream trailer, the owners sought to build a second home for their young family of five. Essential to the design was its integration with the site, natural light and views, indoor/outdoor connection, flexibility for all-seasons, and accommodation of many guests. The house occupies a slender piece of land that flares slightly as it meets the shore of Lake Chelan. This narrow aspect combined with the topography, 40 feet of elevation change from the site’s entry point down to the lake, meant that the house not only needed to provide living space, but also needed to create privacy from neighbors and pathway for moving between levels of the site. The concept is deeply rooted in local vernacular: miner’s cabins, barns, alpine structures, and the gritty natural environment. The interior serves as a clean, modern contrast; a medium on which to experience the landscape’s beauty. Rustic reclaimed wood elements, painted rough-sawn horizontal paneling, and end-grain wood floors juxtapose modern board-formed concrete walls, clean-lined casework and detailing throughout. Board-formed concrete walls anchor the two sides of the house, while windows on perpendicular walls and above bring in substantial light and views, balancing the need for privacy with the desire for a bright and open interior. The east concrete wall runs along an axial hallway, guiding visitors from the entry, through the home, to the southern views of the lake and mountains beyond. The entrance opens into the middle level of three, the heart of the home. This level includes a guest bedroom, a bunk room, and a shared bathroom organized along the axial hallway. The south end of the hallway opens into the bright great room, perched high above the lake. The adjacent kitchen dining area is a simple space highlighted by a 12-foot long bi-folding door, opening onto a partially covered deck. The home is filled with subtlety that nods back to the vernacular concept. A light-filled staircase hidden behind a screen wall is reminiscent of a hayloft. The master suite is a cozy space tucked under the gable roof of the house; a barn door slides open to peek into the great room. A simpler life exists here for a moment.
