Their Final Farewell

A Word From Coach Mannor

KASSIE LIEN Some players possess certain attributes that make them stand out on the ice. For anyone who has ever seen Kassie play her biggest attribute is obvious. Speed. One of if not the fastest skater I have seen in the MIAC over the past twelve years, Kassie utilizes her speed effectively to be a threat anytime she steps on the ice. Whether it be killing penalties, rushing the puck or beating out an icing, Kassie’s speed has given many opposing coaches grey hair over these past four seasons. JANE HANNULA “When in doubt, go to Jane” is a phrase that has developed within the team over the last four seasons. Jane has proven to have an uncanny ability to make a game changing play at the most in opportune times. For example, scoring on an uncontested shot from below the goal line comes to mind. This uncanny ability is a result of Jane’s work ethic and attention to detail on the ice both in practice and games. The coaching staff never has a doubt as to what Jane is going to bring to the ice each day. Soft spoken Jane leads by example and as a result was voted as one this seasons captains.

LINDSAY PASCHKE Gifted with soft hands and fantastic on ice vision, Lindsay has been one of our best playmakers over the past four seasons. She is a player that can slow the game down and see a play that many others would not. Soft-spoken and quick with a smile, Lindsay has made those around her better by not only setting them up with a pass, but more importantly, having fun while doing so. Her positive energy is infectious, making coming to the rink every day more enjoyable.

TAYLOR POGREBA Some players step on the ice as freshman and have the ability to play in every game situation. Others take more time to develop and may even find themselves out of the game day lineup. Taylor was a player that needed more time to develop. And develop she did. Rather than feel sorry for herself, over the past four seasons Taylor has pushed herself mentally and physically to become a player that the coaching staff feels comfortable putting on the ice in any situation. In the process, Taylor has earned the respect of her teammates ultimately being voted captain during this her senior year. See A WORD FROM COACH MANNOR, on the next page

A WORD FROM COACH MANNOR, from previous page

MARAH SHIELDS In her first couple of seasons in a Cardinal uniform, many of Marah’s teammates were hesitant to skate near her during practice. Goalies see hundreds of shots during a practice and it’s safe to say some are going to go in. Saying Marah was not happy to get scored on is an understatement. She was angry. For this reason, she would find herself with a little more space around the crease in which to move. As she matured Marah learned to control the outward appearance of her anger but that same fire still burns inside of her. A fierce competitor, Marah has played the position of goalie with a passion that few can equal. TO THIS YEAR’S SENIOR CLASS This year’s senior class has experienced their fair share of high’s and low’s. Regardless of the situation their collective determination to play the game with pride and represent the program in a positive way has never wavered. I am proud of each and every one of you and know you will find success in whatever the future holds.

I LEARNED TO SKATE BEFORE I could tie my shoes. When I was three years old my dad put skates on my feet because my big sister Kelsey and I had to try hockey before any other sport. Fast forward 15 years to the first day I stepped foot on Saint Mary’s campus to begin my collegiate hockey career. Playing for this team has been wild ride; in my four years here, we’ve had many exhilarating highs and devastating lows. However, my time here has taught me valuable lessons that I would not trade for anything. As my time at Saint Mary’s is coming to a close, I’ve come to reflect on all of the people who have helped me get to where I am today. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me develop into the player that first set foot on this campus. To my family: Thank you for the love, support, and encouragement over the years. You are wonderful individuals that I aspire to be. Grandparents: Thank you for coming to almost all of my collegiate games. It is wonderful how much support you have for me. You are amazing and I love you both. Kelsey: Thank you for the love and support over the years. You are the strongest girl I know and I learn from you everyday. Brett: Thank you for being the older brother that I always wanted but never had. We appreciate everything you have done for my family. Mom: Thank you for being the most inspirational mother. I would love to become the strong, caring, and devoted woman you are. From helping me tie my skates, to driving me to a hockey tryout at 3 a.m., you have supported me so much over the years. You encouraged me to keep going when I was down and been my biggest cheerleader since I was a kid. Thank you for everything you have done for me. Love you mom. Dad: Even though you weren’t sitting in the stands, I always knew you were watching my collegiate games from the best seat in the house. Miss going on long hockey trips, watching you jump up and down after goals, and the endless hours of hockey talks. I would have never been a collegiate athlete if it wasn’t for you. Thank you for being an amazing coach and even more amazing dad. Love ya. To Maeve, Claire, Chloe, Sam, Jenny, Rory, Jesse, Haley: Thank you for being my biggest supporters and loudest cheerleaders. To Freshmen and Sophomores: Thank you for being the fun loving girls See KASSIE BIDS FAREWELL, on the next page

KASSIE BIDS FAREWELL, from the previous page you are. You guys made this year great and I can’t wait to watch you all grow up to be awesome hockey players. To Juniors: Thank you all for being sweethearts and my crazy ladies. Over the years I enjoyed watching each one of you improve into skilled players and I am more than excited to see you all excel on and off the ice next year. To Seniors: Jane, Lindsay, Taylor, and Marah. Jane: Thank you for being the smart and talented girl you are. I enjoyed being your line mate in the beginning of freshman year and I can’t wait to end our senior year together. We’ve been through so much over the years and I am glad we stuck it out... even though science is hard. Lindsay: Nemo, thank you for always making me smile. I am so happy that you were my first friend at Saint Mary’s. You are wonderful and so talented! I’m excited to see where life takes you. Hopefully my future children will be in your class. Tayor: Thank you for being smart and relentless. I have always admired your work ethic and your attitude. Can’t wait to see where your coaching will take you. I know you will do wonderful things! Marah: Thank you for your sassy attitude and your calm loving demeanor. You are a stud goalie and a smart student. Loved being a science major with you so we could share the pain. To Coaches: Thank you for giving me this opportunity to play college hockey and supporting me through the ups and downs these past four years have brought. Matt and Jill: Thanks for pushing me to become stronger on and off the ice. Also for keeping me healthy over the years. I cannot believe these four years have gone by so quickly. I will cherish and remember each moment of this opportunity. Thank you Saint Mary’s.

IN A FEW SHORT WEEKS my hockey career will come to an end. After years of hard work at practices and games I finally have to say goodbye to the sport I love. Although I am saddened my career is ending, I am incredibly grateful for the lessons, experiences, and people this sport has brought into my life. Mom and Dad- Thank you for giving me the opportunity to play hockey. Thank you for the numerous rides to and from practices and games, for purchasing all of the equipment I needed to succeed, and most importantly for the endless support and encouragement you have offered me throughout my career. I am truly blessed to have such kind-hearted, considerate, and selfless parents. Thank you for pushing me to not only be the best player I can be, but also the best person. Heidi and Grace- Thank you for supporting me throughout my entire career. I am incredibly grateful to have formed such positive relationships with both of you. Heidi, even though I could not convince you to come to Saint Mary’s, you will always be my favorite teammate. Extended Family Members- Thank you for playing such a prominent and influential role in my life. I want to give a special thank you to Liz and Chris for being two of my biggest fans. Lauren- Thank you for being a SMUWH super fan. Terry and GMO- Thank you for giving me the opportunity to play hockey at the collegiate level. Thank you for taking interest in me not only as a player, but also as a person. We appreciate all the work you both do for this program. Fellow Seniors- It has been a pleasure getting to play hockey, attend classes, and become friends with each of you. Taylor, thank you for being my first friend at Saint Mary’s. I never would have made it through freshman year without your constant encouragement and support. Marah and Kassie, thank you for also being science majors. I am grateful I have had two people who understand the stress of science, and help keep me sane. Lindsay, thank you for being one of my absolute best friends. My hockey career would not have been the same without you, and I am so glad we have the opportunity to be line mates again for our last few games. Jesse- Thank you for being one of my biggest advocates and one of my best friends. Teammates- Enjoy every second you have left in the Cardinal jersey. The time goes faster than you could ever imagine.

IT ALL STARTED WHEN I was 6 years old. I remember leaving one of my cousin’s hockey games and saying “mom, can I play hockey?” That was the day that hockey became my life. In the last sixteen years, this sport has shaped me into the person I am today. I’m not sure how many people would voluntarily skate outside in negative degree weather, wake up at 6am to go to practice, or spend all of their summer weekends playing hockey in a cold ice arena, but I would do it all 100 times over if I had the chance. Hockey has given me way more than I would have ever dreamed, including lifelong friends that feel more like family. Thinking back on my career gives me butterflies in my stomach. Even though the thought of having only 4 games left makes my heart hurt, it helps knowing that the memories and people will stay with me forever. Mom and Dad: Words cannot explain how grateful I am that you two have been my biggest fans for sixteen years. I can count on one hand the number of games you have missed in my life, and even if one of you couldn’t make it you always made sure the other one would be there to support me. Your support truly means more to me than you can imagine. Mom, thank you for saying yes to six year-old me asking you to play this expensive and time-consuming sport. Hallie: Thank you for being a follower and playing hockey with me. I remember in high school we weren’t allowed to go against each other in practice because we would get way too competitive and it would usually end with us throwing fists. From all of the times shooting pucks in the basement to scoring “P to P” goals in high school, thank you for being my biggest competitor and my favorite teammate. Grandma and Grandpa: Thank you for coming to all of the games you possibly could. I always knew when I looked up in the stands you two would be there. I remember Grandma crying when I scored my first goal and Grandpa sitting by himself in the stands because he was so into the game and didn’t have time to chat. I am so lucky to have the best grandparents in the world!! Pam: Even though you accidentally cheer for the wrong team sometimes, I still love having you at my games! Thank you for supporting me and being SMUWH’s loudest (and most fashionable) fan. Kenz: Can I be you? Jane and Jesse: My college experience has been a crazy ride with you two by my side. You were there for me through the tough times and celebrated with me through the good times. All in all, thanks for being two of my best friends. See LINDSAY BIDS FAREWELL, on the next page

LINDSAY BIDS FAREWELL, from the previous page

Teammates: They aren’t lying 1% when they say time flies. It seems like yesterday I was a freshman and had 100 games ahead of me. Today is my 100th game and I have no clue how that is possible. Make the most of each and every chance you have to play hockey. Don’t make it a chore to come to the rink everyday to practice and to skate herbies. Play for your 6 year-old self that fell in love with the game. Score goals and do good things!! Coaches: Thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to fulfill my dreams. You gave me confidence in myself and helped me when I needed help. It is clear that you two truly care about each and every one of us in all aspects of our lives. What you have displayed in your coaching abilities is what I would like to exemplify to my future students. Gmo: (head nod) Terry: I like you better when you smile!!! In closing, I would like to thank everyone in the Saint Mary’s community for making the last 4 years the best years of my life.

YOU WOULD THINK AFTER 17 years of hockey, one might be ready to say goodbye to playing the game. Unfortunately that just isn’t the case. Growing up as a kid I always knew that college hockey was the goal. I made it. It has been an amazing four years here at Saint Mary’s and I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. To my parents, Greg and Mary- I will forever be in debt to you. Thank you for always being my biggest support system. Mom, thank you for always altering your schedule so that you could get me to where I needed to be- being a mother and wife to three hockey nuts probably wasn’t always the easiest thing in the world to deal with, but you did it for us. You are the best hockey mom out there! Dad, thank you for introducing me to the game that has a large part in molding me into the person I am today. I will never forget the late night Taco Bell’s or Heggies Pizzas after we both got home from late night games in high school. I miss those nights in college. I know it hasn’t always been easy since our schedules never really lined up, but I know you are supporting me always and I have always enjoyed being a coach’s daughter. To my brother, Blayde, sorry for making you suffer in all the cold rinks growing up. I know you would’ve made me do the same if roles were reversed. I will never forget the time in high school, I got a hat trick and you FINALLY threw your hat, even though you didn’t want to. Mom told me you would go to the bathroom when I had two goals just so you wouldn’t have to throw your hat, that is why when you finally did I threw yours back to you. Maybe one of these days I will have to throw my hat for you to pay you back. Watching you play always reminds me why I love the game and our family so much. I hope you reach all of your goals with the game because let me tell you- even on the days you feel like quitting and giving up- every single day is worth it if it ultimately brings you happiness. And I will be there for you every step of the way. To Grandma Lynn and Grandpa Greg- Thank you for the years I spent playing for you, helping you with teams that I was too old to play on, and developing a bond that not all grand kids get with their grandparents. You guys mean the world to me. I will miss hearing grandma’s distinct voice yelling at me to move my feet (which was always a common occurrence). And the weekends that you both spent with me in Winona were always a riot and brought a sense of home to me, which I always need. Grandpa Doug- Thank you for being at as many games as you can and See TAYLOR BIDS FAREWELL, on the next page

just spending time with me after big wins or tough losses. It means a lot to me. I attribute the little speed I have to all the sprints I made you run when we raced when I was a kid. So it looks like there was a little something in it for you after all. To my coaches- Terry and Greg, thank you both for taking a chance on me. Coming into Saint Mary’s, I was coming off of a horrible end to a decent sophomore season and my junior year I played in ten games due to being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I played my entire senior season before finally coming to Saint Mary’s and you never treated me any different and made me earn every ounce of anything I got here. For that I am forever grateful. Thank you for four years of learning, growing, maturing, and developing me into both the player and person I have become. To my fellow seniors, what a ride it has been. It seems like yesterday we were all freaking out about Champion Hill and getting cut from the team Freshman year. Look how far we have come since then! I am honored to share the ice with each and every one of you. We talk about leaving behind a legacy all the time and I think we have

done that. No one can ever question our passion and dedication to giving what we have to the team. You are all going to do great things in life, I have no doubts. To the rest of the team- You all better believe that what you bring to the table is extremely important. There is a lot of potential in each and every one of you that is going to be hard to stop when it comes out. Confidence is always key and I would love nothing more than to see Saint Mary’s back in the playoff race next season. The time you get at Saint Mary’s goes fast, don’t take it for granted. Have fun with the time you have left. Thank you all for being you and making it so hard to say goodbye to this team. Sharing the ice with you has been nothing but a pleasure through the good times and the bad. To Bre Gaffy- Thank you for always supporting me. From playing along side you at times when I was a forward, to you picking me up when I was at my worst in my transition to defense, to now still sending me texts of encouragement and assurance. I am so thankful to have you in my life as a role model and an even better friend. I cannot wait to see where our future goes in the See TAYLOR BIDS FAREWELL, on the next page

coaching world with the Blades and whatever endeavors we get ourselves into. You’re the best. To Reed- Sorry for making you work for Terry all the time. And when you aren’t working for him, you have to sit in the cold rink watching a sport you don’t even like. But hey, I already know I am the worst. But thanks for always coming when my family couldn’t or just coming because you wanted to. To Matt Sagar and Jill- Thank you Matt for pushing me to my limits and beyond, and Jill for being there when my old body just couldn’t take it anymore. Thank you both for making this program so special over my four years, I am almost certain we have the best strength and conditioning coach and trainer in the MIAC. I have never seen two people so invested in individuals on a team in my years of playing. Your unconditional dedication and love for us does not go unnoticed. Most importantly- thank you hockey. You have taught me how to love, how to battle through adversity, to rise from defeat, to win with class, to work hard and never expect to be handed anything. I have played every single role- someone who doesn’t see a lot of ice time, someone who was a healthy scratch, someone who logged a ton of minutes, and someone for the team to look up to and rely on to do their job. I have enjoyed and embraced every role I have ever played and that is something that I will take with me for the rest of my life and utilize in the real world. Though my playing days are nearly over, the game never ends. I aspire to coach and give back to the game that has given me so much. Thank you Saint Mary’s for four incredible years of my life.
