WHY STRENGTH TRAIN?
WHAT TO EXPECT
Strength training influences every athletic program in the country, regardless of sport or gender. Athletes now find it necessary to lift weights and participate in conditioning programs to better prepare themselves for the competitive rigors of the athletic season and the use of strength training — also known as resistance training — to improve athletic performance is growing among athletes of all ages.
• Each athlete will be put through the Functional Movement Screen before training starts in order to find limitations and asymmetries in movement.
Strength training is not power lifting, bodybuilding or trying to lift the most weight possible. Strength training is a tool that can augment sport performance through improved strength and motor control. An added bonus of strength training is injury prevention. Athletes who strength train tend to have fewer injuries and if an injury does occur to an athlete who has been strength training properly, it will probably not be as serious and will tend to heal faster. Coach Silbernagel and his staff will teach athletes how to train effectively and safely in order to develop to their full potential.
• Emphasis will be placed on technique and athlete development of movement patterns. • June workouts will consist of roughly 60 minutes weight training and 30 minutes of change of direction/energy system development. • July workouts will consist of roughly 45 minutes of weight training and 45 minutes of acceleration/change of direction/plyometric/energy system development. • As we get closer to the school year we want to get the body ready for the demands of the athlete’s sport. • A wide variety of training techniques will be utilized including but not limited to:
