Going for the Gold; Youngsters from several congregations of the diocese took part in a day of fun and some serious, if disguised, training at the “Acolyte Olympics,” held March 9 at St. James’ Church, South Pasadena. Above, the acolytes compete in the Team Torch Obstacle Course and at left in Crucifix Limbo. Other games included Liturgical Simon Says, Great Vigil Endurance Squats, Liturgical Trivia, Hymn Hum and the Javelin Torch Toss. Participating congregations included the Cathedral Center Congregation of St. Athanasius; St. Mark’s, Van Nuys; St. Edmund’s, San Marino; St. Francis’, Simi Valley; Immanuel, El Monte; Holy Trinity/St. Benedict’s, Alhambra, and St. James’, Pasadena. The winning team was the group from Alhambra, pictured at left as Its members served at the Eucharist that ended the day’s activities. The diocesan Program Group on Youth Ministries sponsored the event, which was coordinated by PGYM member and St. James’ youth leader Todd Blackham.

Cathedral Bookstore launches new website

T

he Cathedral Bookstore at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul recently launched a new website to better serve its customers. To visit the new site, go to cathedral-book store.myshopify.com. According to bookstore manager Canon Herminia Hipolito, the new site currently includes only some of the bookstore’s many offerings of books, liturgical resources, decorative items, jewelry and art. More items will

be added in the future, she said. Customers may also call the bookstore at 213.482.2040 ext. 228, or send an email to [email protected]. The bookstore is located at the Cathedral Center, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles 90026, and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and occasionally on Saturdays (call ahead for times). It is closed on Sundays. ?

he Rt. Rev. Justin Welby, 56, former Bishop of Durham, will be enthroned as archbishop of Canterbury at Canterbury Cathedral March 21. The service will be broadcast live on BBC2 starting at 2:30 p.m. London time (7:30 a.m. PDT). The archbishop of Canterbury is appointed by the reigning monarch, who is “supreme Governor” Justin Welby of the Church of England, on recommendation of the Crown Appointments Commission. The dean and canons of Canterbury Cathedral then formally elect the candidate. Welby’s appointment was confirmed by the wider Church of England at a ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, on Feb. 4 presided over by the archbishop of York with the assistance of the bishops of London, Winchester, Salisbury, Worcester, Rochester, Lincoln, Leicester and Norwich. The archbishop of Canterbury is considered “first among equals” (primus inter pares) among the world’s Anglican bishops. He convenes the Lambeth Conference and Primates’ Meeting, and presides over meetings of the Anglican Consultative Council. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori of the U.S.-based Episcopal Church, which is a province of the Anglican Communion, will attend the enthronement. Welby’s predecessor in the seat of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, retired from the office Jan. 1 and was subsequently named a life peer by Queen Elizabeth with the title of Baron Williams of Oystermouth (Swansea). Williams, who had served as archbishop of Canterbury since late 2002, has returned to academia as master of Magdalene College at Cambridge University. ?

Lenten retreat with Sandra Lommasson

A

s I write this, Bishop Jon, Bishop Diane and I are on an airplane returning to Los Angeles from the Spring Retreat meeting of the House of Bishops. As I reflect on all that happened there, I am profoundly aware of what a privilege it is to share in God’s mission with such wonderful colleagues. As Bishop George Councell of the Diocese of New Jersey put it: “It is a privilege to be able to do what I love serving people that I love for the One I love most.” We worked hard. “A Word to the Church: Godly Leadership in the Face of Violence” is a letter to the whole church articulating our renewed commitment to combatting violence “in our world, our society, our churches, our homes and ourselves (which) alienate us from God and each other.” It can be found at http:// bit.ly/16szlyY. Perhaps more important than the letter, we truly shared one another’s burdens as we listened to five of our colleagues speak movingly of Godly leadership in the midst of acute loss

(the Sandy Hook School shootings), natural disaster (Hurricane Sandy), chronic loss (ongoing struggles in Haiti), emotional loss (Native Americans dealing with historical oppression), and personal loss (Bishop Jon Bruno sharing with us three critical times that have shaped his life — the most recent being his battle with acute monocytic leukemia.) We listened and cried and prayed and worshipped and sang and even danced together as we tried to remain true to our faith, which tells us (as Bishop Laura Ahrens of Connecticut said) that “out of the cross, a symbol of violence and death, comes forgiveness and new life.” I do not believe that I am alone in thinking that this was the best meeting of the House of Bishops that we’ve ever had. Thanks be to God. ?
