March 2007 SPRING KICK-OFF EVENT We're off to an exuberant start to our EWGA golf season. Nearly 100 ladies were present at Walnut Grove Country Club for lunch on a beautiful sunny Sunday, March 4th. Excitement was in the air for the announcement of new and innovative program events for the coming season. There were many happy recipients of prizes such as free rounds of golf, club fittings, complimentary EWGA membership, golf lessons, massages, a beautiful gift basket from Brio's, and a grand prize of a $500 travel certificate from Miami Valley AAA that went to Jill Robinette. The league, outing, and education sign up tables were over flowing with "anxious to get started" members. There is always an opportunity for you to become a member and/or sign up for events and leagues; it's not too late, we are JUST getting started. See signup sheet at the end of the newsletter. Always check our website for upcoming events, news, information and how you can participate and get the most out of your EWGA membership. www.ewgadayton.org. SeeMISSION pictures of the Kickoff THE EWGA Event at our website. We are all looking forward to a great season of playing golf and having fun!! The Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA) is a not-for-profit organization established in 1991 to provide opportunities for women to learn, play, and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life.
Welcome New Members!! We are delighted to welcome the following women to our chapter:
Dee Pearson Beverly Smith Susan Mardis Sylvia Baker Cheryl Davis Bernice Brown Michelle Robinson Barbara Jacobs Anissa Bell Linda Shepard Vicki Hilliard
Note from the President WOW!! is all I can say about the fabulous kickoff event held on March 4 at Walnut Grove Country Club. We had over 100 women in attendance – a combination of long-time members, brand new members and those considering membership. We also had one of our new sponsors present: AAA Miami Valley. The energy and enthusiasm were electric! A big THANK YOU goes out to all who were instrumental behind the scenes in preparing for such a success: Barb Patrick and the Social Events Committee members as well as Board members and their committees who manned the sign up tables. The positive response was wonderful. As mentioned at the kickoff, the attraction and retention of members is a high priority for us this year. If you have friends who are interested in learning more about EWGA Dayton, please make sure they know about the New Member Reception at 6:00 at Brio’s on Thursday, March 29. The more the merrier. The advantage of joining now is that new members will have the full golf season to participate in all of our events. If any of us on the Board can help answer questions or “sell” the organization, please just ask us. We look forward to seeing all of you and meeting your potential new members.
Mark Your Calendar • New Member Reception - Thursday, March 29th, 6:00 p.m. at Brio's at the Greene. Join us for a Happy Hour Event...open to everyone, new members and guests especially. What’s in the Golf Attic…..
This will be a column dedicated to stories from our members about memorable or funny incidents that happened on the golf course. Please Forward Any Stories You May Have To:
[email protected] Well ladies, we are off to a good start with the items collected for the Golf Attic at Kick-off. The Golf Attic is a repository for your used golf equipment, to be made available for purchase by new players. So far, we have about 50 golf clubs (putters seem to be a hot item), 3 golf bags, 6 pairs of shoes, lots of new unopened golf balls, visors and other sundry items, too. The first Golf Attic sale is set for Sunday, June 10th at Double Eagle Golf Center in Waynesville, in conjunction with the Big Break Education Event. So there's plenty of time to still get in your donations. Please ask your friends, neighbors and co-workers for their donations, too. To arrange for your items to be picked up or for a drop off location, please contact Roya Vary at
[email protected] or 684-5431.
and I promise I will publish it !!
HANDICAPS – THE WHAT’S & WHY’S Establishing your handicap is a terrific way to measure your playing progress. It also makes the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling golfers of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis. Handicaps are also required to compete in certain chapter, charity and other tournaments and golf events. Handicap Services You have two choices for handicap services. You can use the Miami Valley Golf Association GHIN service, or the EWGA’s Golf Life Management System (GLMS). The choice is yours to make. •
With the GHIN service, you will need to pay the current annual subscription fee of $25. GHIN service provides membership in the Miami Valley Golf Association and the Dayton District Women’s Golf Association (DDWGA), which makes you eligible to participate in their events and supports your local USGA regional golf association. GHIN allows you to post scores via the internet and review your scoring record, as well as the scoring records of others within the GHIN system. You will also be provided a card that you can print with your Handicap index. Go to the Dayton EWGA website www.ewgadayton.org to download a registration form for the GHIN system.
•
You can also obtain a USGA Handicap Index through the EWGA Golf Life Management System (GLMS). The cost of the service is included in your EWGA membership dues. If you elect to switch from GHIN to EWGA, you will need to re-enter your scoring history in the Golf Life Management System. (Enter the most recent 20 scores if you have that many available) (Remember, your handicap is based on a rolling scoring history that transcends the playing year.) To enroll in the GLMS go to the EWGA website www.ewga.com under Golf Life Management System, “Post a Score”. To activate your account just Par Fore the Course

login to your account using the instructions on the website. GLMS allows you to post scores on-line, track personal game statistics, print a handicap card, view your scoring history, etc. What is a handicap? A handicap is a number that represents your skill level and potential scoring ability. Generally speaking, your handicap value is representative of how you should expect to score in relation to par. It’s actually a little more complicated than that because other factors are considered such as which tees you play from and how difficult the course is. It is also weighted such that it’s more representative of what you’d expect to score on a good day rather than on an average day. For specifics on the handicap system and the actual formula used to determine your handicap, visit usga.org. And don’t worry about the math; the computer network handles all the calculations for you.
Condolences Kristin Bright, who was a charter member and was a member for several years before moving to Florida, lost her husband Mark to cancer. Mark was a pilot for Northwest Airlines and a delightful man. Pam Grothouse, who has been a member since 2001 also lost her husband to cancer recently. Pam played at Rollandia last year. We would like to express our sincere condolences to Kristin and Pam. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Why would I want to maintain a handicap? Benefits of maintaining a handicap include the ability to compete with golfers of other skill levels on an equitable basis on any course, from any tees. It also provides an objective way to measure golf skill improvement. An official handicap is required to compete in some of our competitive tournament. Do I need a handicap to join EWGA? No, but you do need one to participate in the EWGA Championship Series which includes the Chapter Championship. How much does it cost to maintain a handicap with EWGA? Handicap service through Golf Life Management System is a part of all levels of membership in EWGA. Handicap service through GHIN is offered for an additional fee of $25.00. How do I access and activate my account on the Golf Life Management System? Access to the system is through the EWGA website. Members need to activate their account by following the directions previously provided to via email from EWGA or by going to the activation page on the EWGA.com website. Once you've activated your account, on subsequent visits you can access the Golf Life Management System by logging in with your EWGA account at www.ewga.com What are my responsibilities in maintaining a handicap? As with all aspects of golf, the handicap system expects honesty and integrity from its participants. All individuals maintaining an official handicap have the following responsibilities: •
Post every eligible score during the posting season. In Ohio, the posting season is from March through November. Please check with your golf club for specific dates.
•
Play all rounds eligible for posting under the USGA Rules of Golf.
•
Make an effort to make the best score on each hole of every round played.
When and how do I post my golf scores on the GLMS system? It is best to post scores as soon as possible after the round has been played. Posting scores will be done exclusively using the internet through EWGA's score posting page. Posting scores on the GHIN system can also be done on the internet at www.ghin.com “post online”. . How do I keep track of my handicap? Log on to the Golf Life Management System through EWGA.com. You can track your handicap, see the trend, as well as your actual index and scoring history. Information on keeping track of your handicap can be obtained at www.ghin.com. Questions? Contact Mary Rice, Handicap Chair at
[email protected] or call (937) 864-2094.
Education The EWGA is going to try something new. Many of you heard about the Educational League at our annual Kick off and for those who could not attend; it is a 10 week instructional league at Rollandia offering beginners the opportunity to learn the game of golf in a non-threatening setting with an excellent teacher, Jim Rue. In fact, any golfer who wants to go back and learn the basics of golf is welcome to join this innovative league. Here is what it will look like: 4 weeks of 1-hour instruction, classroom and range; 3 weeks instruction at the range & 1-3 holes of play (Jim and volunteer mentors will be with you on the course). The last 3 weeks of the league will be 9 holes of golf. If you know anyone who has wanted to learn this great game but was too intimidated to try it out, please pass this information on. The league will cost $189.99 for members and $215.00 for non-members.
