MARCH 2013
NEWSLETTER More Than a Thrift Store Second Chances is a thrift store located on Main Street in River Falls. Many people know about the Second Chances thrift store, but few realize that it is actually a program of Turningpoint. Our Second Chances store has been in business for over 8 years, and during that time we have enjoyed growing success. For the past 4 ½ years, Second Chances has been operating out of a rented retail space at 125 North Main Street, River Falls; but starting August 2013, the new PERMANENT home of Second Chances will be at 117/119 N Main Street, River Falls. On July 31, 2013, Turningpoint purchased this new space and began a large scale demolition/remodeling project called the Mainstreet Remodeling project. This new space will save money, provide much needed storage space, an alley loading area, an elevator, and a floor of administrative office spaces.

Second Chances provides critical revenue each year directly into Turningpoint’s programs. In addition to this much needed revenue, the store provides furniture, household items, clothing and book vouchers to any individual who has been impacted by domestic and/or sexual violence. Second Chances provides free clothing to people in need via a voucher system with Our Neighbor’s Place Day Center. In addition to

providing necessary revenue to Turningpoint programs and essential items to victims/survivors, Second Chances is also a public face for our organization which allows us to keep the shelter location more discrete. Individuals can drop off donations for the shelter at the store. People who have been impacted by domestic and sexual violence can reach out for our services in a non-threatening way, by shopping at the store. The store provides a low cost option for individuals in the community, is extremely good for the environment, brings in outside shoppers and revenue into the downtown area, and much more. The Mainstreet Remodeling project is on schedule. This fall we were busy with demolition and building a new elevator shaft. We currently have completed a three-story elevator shaft and the elevator itself is going into the building as this newsletter is being printed. The entire building has been rewired and we are in the process of framing and plumbing. In the next few months our plan is to finish sheet rocking, add flooring, paint and any additional final touches. The new home of Second Chances will be near completion and ready to host an open house event the beginning of July. (Stay tuned...) ...Continued on page 2-Director’s Message

A new home for Second Chances is just part of the Mainstreet Remodeling project. This project will also allow Turningpoint to add 17 more beds to its emergency shelter space. When we reach our fundraising goal of $85,000, we will move 7 administrative offices from the current shelter location to the third floor of the new building. The seven administrative offices will be converted to bed rooms and will double our current emergency shelter capacity. Without these additional shelter beds, Turningpoint will be forced to turn away victims/survivors that take the courageous step to come forward and ask for help. When they call we will be forced to say, “I am sorry, but we are full.” This past December we turned away 14 individuals. I remember a day in December that the shelter was full, we had a family sleeping in our board room, a family at a local hotel, and we still had to turn away a family that was in danger. Turning away individuals that need our services is unacceptable anytime, but especially in the dead of winter, right before Christmas. To date, we have raised $13,000 and we are grateful to everyone that has contributed their time, talent and money to get us this far. Please help us reach our goal of $85,000 and complete the Mainstreet Remodeling project. For every $25.00 that is donated to the Mainstreet Remodeling project, we can provide 3 nights of emergency shelter for an individual in need of safety, support and strength. Donate today and create a tile that will hang on the walls of the new store. If you send a donation in the enclosed envelope, you will receive a call or email with detailed instructions about how to design your tile or have one designed for you. My family donated $500 to this important project. Did you know??? I’m Katie Ryan the new Sexual Assault Services Coordinator. I started at Turningpoint in January of 2010 as an intern from the University Wisconsin-River Falls Sociology program and I have worked my way through the ranks. You could say that I am the Turningpoint woman of all trades. I am very excited for this new adventure! I am invested in helping victims/ survivors find their voice and break free from trauma. Some of my program focuses for this year are developing services in our area for victims/survivors of human trafficking, and connecting with the college population spanning St. Croix and Pierce Counties, including, the University Wisconsin-River Falls, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, and Chippewa Valley Technical College. I am graduating soon and plan to become a licensed practicing clinical counselor. If anyone would like to know more about our sexual assault advocacy services or would like a free education presentation email or give me a call. “1 in 6 American women and 1 in 33 American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.” —RAINN “Every 2 minutes, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted.” —RAINN

[email protected] Volunteer Feature We LOVE our volunteers! They clean, organize, carry, tidy, plan, walk, run, donate, sort, fix, believe and care. Everything they do helps support the mission of Turningpoint. This newsletter features our Turningpoint Volunteer Maintenance Team, with us since October. Ken Stoeberl, Joe Fusilier and his son, Tom, have been with us since October. They, have not only cleaned up the maintenance needs list, but are ahead of it now! Joe (pictured left) shared his thoughts with us: “Why I volunteer: We saw a notice in the St. Bridget’s bulletin about needing maintenance help at Turningpoint. My son is in confirmation class; volunteering is encouraged as part of that & this sounded worthwhile. Maintenance at the shelter gives us a chance to work together and I can teach him things he won’t learn on the computer. The staff at Turningpoint has an important job taking care of the battered women. We take pride in doing our small part to keep the place in shape and pleasant.” Volunteer…on your own, or as a family! Contact Liz Malanaphy;
