[email protected] Flight Captain’s Corner Greetings once again from your Flight Captain! Lots of great news to pass on to you in this edition of the Flight 102 newsletter. Our flight continues its support of pilot candidates from the local ROTC detachments. We presented awards to an Air Force cadet and a Navy Midshipman. Cadet Scott Strebel and Midshipman Ashleigh Forte were recipients of this year’s awards presented by Joe Redden, Scholarship Chair, at the February meeting. One of this year’s awards was given specifically in the name of Robert Chambers and the other in honor of all the other flight members who have taken their last flight. I was pleased to present them with Daedalian Challenge Coins, and I encouraged them to take advantage of National’s program of three years of dues free membership upon completion of flight training and join the Daedalians. Our flight has become a vibrant and respected one since it was chartered in 2003. In 2009 we were awarded the Doolittle Award for Outstanding Flight. Additionally, we have been recognized several times by national for our recruiting achievements. I am pleased to announce that Flight 102 is once more being recognized with the Loren and Randy Spencer Scholarship Award for recruiting for calendar year 2013. This is your award! You bring your fellow aviators to our meetings and encourage them to join us. Thank you all for your continued efforts and support of our flight.

All that being said, I need each of you to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself what I can do to help out. This organization needs you to step up and take an active role in the normal operations. For example, our raffle guru is moving away and we need somebody to fill that job. Several flight officer positions are due for new faces, and we still have a couple that remain open. If we don’t have some change I am afraid that we will start to stall out and lose the momentum that has been created. Talk to the flight officers and find out what it is that they do and the rewards of being part of the success of Flight 102. We need you to step up. Don’t worry - the folks you replace will be ready to help you out in the transition. Take a chance and I think you will find it to be very rewarding. One last item before I close. The Crowne Plaza had notified me that they will be raising the price per head if we chose to hold our Christmas/Holiday gathering there again. You will be receiving an email survey through Apollo soon to ask you for feedback about our options. Take the time to let us know your thoughts. Volabamus Volamus Brad

JROTC Awards Presentations
If you missed our February meeting, you missed an outstanding presentation by World War II vet Phil Turner. Below is a copy of the poem he presented to the flight.
A list of all 72 Flight 102 High School JROTC presentations has been posted to Apollo and is being sent out by e-mail to our members. Please let Vance Gammons know if you can support this very important program. It is a great way to pay it forward to those that will follow in our footsteps.
I am a Daedalian Lt Gen Nick Kehoe, National Commander, Order of Daedalians I am a Daedalian. I proudly wear the military pilot wings of the United States of America. I and my fellow Daedalians honor the heritage of our founder members who were the first military pilots to answer their Nation’s call and take to the air in defense of freedom during World War I. I cherish what they represented and am committed to perpetuating their legacy of patriotism, courage and the spirit of self-sacrifice that placed service to the Nation above personal safety. As a Daedalian, I am a commissioned officer or warrant officer who has completed a rigorous course of instruction that certified me to control heavier-than-air craft and soar into the heavens and, in the words of John Gillespie Magee, Jr., “…put out my hand and touched the face of God.” I am committed to recognizing excellence in manned flight and contributing to the development of character and responsible citizenship in America’s youth. As aviation has expanded since the days of our founders over more than a century of manned flight, I recognize the many developments that have contributed to the vast potential of military airpower and, in a spirit of teamwork and aerial comradeship, salute those who have and continue to make it possible.
