Two local priests named to task force on marriage Consecration in Cuernavaca: Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool joined bishops of the Anglican Church in Mexico on Feb. 23 to take part in the consecration of the Rt. Rev. Enrique Trevino Cruz — pictured at left with Glasspool — as bishop of the Diocese of Cuernavaca. The Rt. Rev. Sergio Carranza, retired bishop of the Diocese of Mexico and a former bishop assistant in the Diocese of Los Angeles, also is pictured above, third from right. Cruz and Glasspool became acquainted when Glasspool led a group of Episcopalians from the Diocese of Los Angeles on a two-week Spanish-language immersion pilgrimage to Cuernavaca in January. Council to support deacons’ ministry

M

embers of the diocese’s new Deacon Council gathered for the first time on Jan. 30 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul. The council was established to work collaboratively with Archdeacon Joanne Leslie to oversee, promote and strengthen the community of deacons. “There is provision for the creation of such a council in Canon 7, but not all dioceses have one,” said Leslie. “My conversations over the past two years with archdeacons in dioceses that do have a deacon council have been encouraging. So I proposed the idea to Bishop (J. Jon) Bruno and he agreed enthusiastically.” The new council has six members, each appointed for a two-year term. Each member will provide leadership in

one or more areas of diaconal ministry. Pictured here is lay member Hank Gatlin and deacons Jamesetta Hammons, Archdeacon Leslie, Susie Kenny, Dennis Gibbs, Catherine Wagar and Charleen Crean. ?

he Rev. Canon Susan Russell, an associate priest at All Saints Church, Pasadena, and the Very Rev. Sylvia Sweeney, dean of Bloy House (Episcopal Theological School at Claremont) are among the 12 members of the Episcopal Church’s new Task Force on the Study of Marriage, as announced by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and House of Deputies President Gay Jennings. Approved at the 77th General Convention in July 2012, Resolution A050 called for the creation of a task force of “theologians, liturgists, pastors, and educators to identify and explore biblical, theological, historical, liturgical, and canonical dimensions of marriage.” The group is expected to consult broadly across the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion, develop tools for theological reflection and discussion, and make a report to the 78th General Convention in 2015. Other members of the Task Force on the Study of Marriage are: the Rev. Brian C. Taylor, chair, Diocese of the Rio Grande; Carolyn M. Chilton, Diocese of Virginia; the Rt. Rev. Thomas C. Ely, Diocese of Vermont; Joan Geiszler-Ludlum, Diocese of East Carolina; the Rev. Gail Greenwell, Diocese of Kansas; the Rev. Tobias S. Haller, Diocese of New York; the Rev. Canon W. (Will) H. Mebane, Jr., Diocese of Ohio; the Rev. J. David Knight, Diocese of Mississippi; the Rev. Dr. Cameron E. Partridge, Diocese of Massachusetts; and the Rt. Rev. W. Andrew Waldo, Diocese of Upper South Carolina. ?

hen Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’” —Luke 13:6-9

I

’ve always found this parable interesting – was three years too long to wait for the tree to bear fruit? Will caring for it in a new way cause it to bear fruit next year? Why wasn’t it nurtured before this — or rather, how was it nurtured before this? In doing mission and ministry in the Church, we are called upon to nurture and care for the ministries in which we are en-

gaged. We do this by offering our time, talent and treasure to our local faith community. When we hold back sharing the gifts God has given us, we are, in effect, depriving nourishment to the tree in the vineyard. When we cease to share from the abundance in our lives, we are denying a ministry or ministries the gift of surviving and bearing fruit. How are you participating in your community of faith? What more could or should you do? This season of Lent is the perfect time to take inventory of things done and left undone, and to see where your participation in your local community of faith can be broadened. Are you sharing from your first fruits? After all, God shared God’s first fruit — Jesus — with all of us. ?

Pysanky egg-dying in Santa Clarita

S

t. Stephen’s Church, Santa Clarita, will hold its fifth annual Pysanky-making class on March 10, 1 - 4 p.m. in Spurling Hall. Artists Barbara Wampole and Olga Kaczmar will be the instructors. Psyanky are Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using the waxand-dye method. Bring a dozen or half-dozen raw, room-temperature eggs. (The wax won’t adhere to chilled eggs.) Utensils and tools for applying the wax will be provided and those who have their own may bring them. Topics covered in the class include: tool demonstration, pencil and dye explanation, the waxing process, dying the egg, and removing the wax. The class is only open to adults — no children, because the dyes are toxic. There is no charge for the class. For reservations, call 661.259.7307. St. Stephen’s Church is located at 24901 Orchard Village Road, Santa Clarita 91355. ?
