DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. STARK COUNTY ALUMNAE CHAPTER Marie J Slaughter Scholarship The Marie J. Slaughter scholarship was established to celebrate the forty-one years of service Soror Slaughter dedicated to the teaching profession. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a degree in higher education. Sharon Glenn Memorial Scholarship Sharon Glenn was the first African-American speech and language pathologist in Canton City Schools. The scholarship in her honor was established in 1990. To qualify for this $1,000 scholarship you must have a documented disability or be enrolled in a degree program aimed at working with disabled individuals. Qualifications for the scholarship(s) must be present in order for the sorority to process your application. Applicants must: •

Be a resident of Stark County



Be of African –American descent



Be enrolled in a college/university that offers at least a baccalaureate degree or higher



Have a minimum overall G.P.A. of 2.7

Essay must be on a separate page, re-state the question being answered, be a minimum of 150 words, and include your name typed in the upper right-hand corner. In reviewing the essays, the judges will consider the following criteria in awarding points: - Correct use of grammar and punctuation - Originality, quality and understanding of ideas presented - Use of research materials to support ideas and assumptions - Overall appearance and of the essay On a separate page type an essay with a minimum of 150 words that answers one of the following questions. Option 1: “Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It is important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. *Missing any of the requested items will result in an incomplete package and will not be considered for an award. Scholarship monies will be awarded in September after receipt of official verification, from the college or university, of the student’s enrollment in Fall 2016 courses.

INSTRUCTIONS to REFERENCES

1. References should submit a typed and signed letter of reference on official letterhead. 2. These letters should addressed to: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Stark County Alumnae Chapter ~ Scholarship Committee 3. If you are mailing the letter, please use the following address: P.O. Box 8145, Canton, Ohio 447111 (Note: Mailed letter must reach the P.O. Box by the June 30 th deadline)
